“Knew on for a big break inside century three mall. These photos show the water water damage on the first floor of the mall. A big section cordoned off awaiting a broken sprinkler pipe near the old macy stories to blame here setting water from upstairs. All the way down to lower levels.
An employee at one store. Told us the water reached all the way back to the cash registers and they had to shut down the rest. The mall closes. Well for the remainder of the day.
Welcome to the infamous century 3 mall in west mifflin pennsylvania. Century 3 mall has been covered by just about every youtuber out there. So i wanted this video to focus more on what it was like being inside this mall. And my experience as well as sprinkle in some of the facts and history.
The century 3 mall would be built on the site of a former slag dump construction. Would begin in 1976. And the mall would open to much fanfare in 1979. When the mall opened.
It was the third largest shopping mall. In the world. It had three levels containing 1 million. Two hundred and ninety thousand square feet of retail space and over 200 shops and restaurants.
The mall would be completed in two phases. The first phase would be completed on october 24th 1979. This would include three anchors a two level kaufman s a two level jcpenney and a mount gum reward phase. Two and it s 46 stores debuted on march 12th 1985 to would bring two new anchors.
A two level gimbels. Which is a pittsburgh local department store and a two level sears. The area that you are looking at right now used to be where the carousel once stood and i do have some photos of that that i m going to insert into this video. Many anchors would come and go over the years this would include stores such as marshalls tj maxx stephen barry s wix dick s sporting goods horns lazarus macy s kaufman s furniture and a macy s furniture gallery.
I was really thrilled when i saw this disney store it brought back some great memories of when i was a child over the lifespan of this mall. It would see many owners this would include simon property group who would default on their 78 million dollar loan. This would cause their lender. Jones lang lasalle to take control of the property moon lien would also become one of the owners of this mall.

It s more than likely a great mall in my eyes. The aesthetics of the skylights in this mall are absolutely fantastic. Especially when paired with the many palm trees throughout the corridors. You know i really enjoyed these escalators.
I ve never seen mirrored escalators like this before let me know down in the comments section. Below. If your mole ever had any escalators similar to these you know my initial thoughts on this mall were wow. This place is huge and really cool.
And then i went. Oh yeah wait there s like no stores. The carpets stained. The fountains.
Not working the lighting. Looks like you re in 1970 and then i said yeah. But the aesthetics are just awesome in this place. Just the vast empty spaces and being able to just walk around and it s like being in another time period.
I absolutely loved it so call me crazy. But i like it when a mall doesn t update and become bland and boring you know another thing that caught my attention was the center court. It has this awesome fountain inside of this star pattern on the carpeting and i thought that was really cool. I just wish it had have been taken better care of or that i could have seen it in its glory days.
Unfortunately. The fountain had been shut down. But i loved the blue tile work immediately upon seeing these stars hanging from the ceiling. All i could get my mind to focus on was macy s you know stars.
So it must be something macy s related. But nope it s just stars when macy s closed in 2016. It offered in a mass exodus. This would cause the occupancy rate to go from 60 in 2015 down to 40 in 2016.
All the way down to an appalling 10 in 2017 whoa. This is one of the highlights of the mall. I love this mirrored glass with that weird glow from the sodium vapor lights. That s just amazing you know i figured i d tell you where this is located because you really can t tell from these shots.
But it s located right near the food court. The once sprawling foodcourt home to over 20 eateries would now lay abandoned after its last remaining food court. Tenant italian village pizza would close on july 1st 2017. The mall would lose its double decker carousel in 2018.
As it was sent to an undisclosed location in austin. Texas. 2018. Would also be an exciting year for the mall as filming would take place in the old montgomery ward horns lazarus kaufman s macy s furniture gallery building for the netflix original series mind hunter filming would be completed on may 11th 2018 by 2019 the mall was pretty empty and the last chain store the life uniform would close for good by february 6th 2019 the west mifflin fire code would deem sentry.
3 mall to be unsafe and uninhabitable this was due to the numerous code violations. Which would include things like the sprinkler system not functioning and no heat. The mall is slated to be torn down in march of 2020 in its place. They re planning to put in a mixed use development.
This would include things like restaurants. Some retail and apartments as well as office space. So let s just hope that they actually go through with this vision and that it doesn t turn into another amazon warehouse like so many other malls have i mean don t get me wrong i love amazon. But i think i d rather have the mall and i m sure a lot of people would agree this is the new dimension comics.
A local chain in the pittsburgh area and a boy this is the coolest comic store. I ve ever seen it s huge they have many locations so if you re in the pittsburgh area. I highly recommend that you find one and check it out. But wait it s not over yet because while i was looking for some old photos of century 3 mall.
I came across two news articles from a local pittsburgh news station and may not be here. After all for the century 3 mall. The post gazette reports that a bankruptcy judge will allow the malls owners to borrow up to 5 million dollars to make repairs so as of right now. The building is safe once again for occupancy last week.
Officials in west mifflin closed the mall saying it was unsafe and uninhabitable so what happened and why did century 3. Never reopen. Why were the necessary repairs and never made in my opinion. This mall went too far down.
The rabbit hole of no return. Too many anchors and tenants had left the mall never to return and no matter how much local residents wanted to see this mall come back to life and begin shopping at it again. The reality was that new stores. Just were not going to come into this mall and take the chance and then we have to think.
And remember oh wait the current owner of this mall is moonbeam and they have a terrible track record of destroying malls. I couldn t find any information as to whether moonbeam took that loan or not but if they did then they said screw it we re gonna demolish them all anyways and run with the money as of february 2020 the mall still sits vacant boarded up and closed and i don t doubt that come march of 2020 the mall will be torn down if and when the mall gets demolished. I ll try and be there to document it new right now at 6. The plan to redevelop century 3 mall.
Just took a step forward there channel 11 stricker. A live at six now with what could get the malls owner out of bankruptcy. Rick yeah. David tonight.
The mall owner has agreed to revise the plans to redevelop that property and an attorney for one of the creditors west mifflin borough calls that a step in the right direction. After complaints that the redevelopment plan for the mostly vacant century 3. Mall lacked detail. The owner has now revised the plan to include among other information.
A market study outlining potential uses for the property council. And the mayor heard from many citizens we are protecting the public s interest. Phil dealer sente is the solicitor for west mifflin. Borough one of the creditors owed more than 200000 in back taxes at this juncture.
We want to see the complete plan and we will definitely express through bankruptcy counsel to the to the honorable federal court. What our position is with regard to everything century 3 opened 40 years ago. And last year filed for chapter 11. Bankruptcy protection.
The owner now wants to build a mix of commercial residential office and entertainment venues on the property sears had objected claiming the company still owes them more than four million dollars. But a deal with sears is reportedly in the works. The company still needs approval from the bankruptcy courts deloo sente. Says.
Borough leaders are anxious to see the property where jc penney still operates a store vibrant once again west mifflin borough council. The mayor have moved this borough forward in the last eight years like never before and so we re very pleased once again to have potentially a successful outcome now a court hearing on the revised plan is set for december. I did reach out to the attorney for the mall owner he did get back to me just a short time ago. But said he did not have time to comment on it.
