Guys. Its doc and why am i standing here in this scorching sunshine. Because because im gonna talk to you today about saving your lawn when it comes hot drought conditions so hold on one sec.
Hey guys great timing for this video. Because guess what i did the family and i went on a vacation. We went away for seven solid days and guess what we had zero rain zero rain.
But i prepared for it and i saved my lawn so thats what im gonna talk to you about today first of all im gonna throw in a bunch of different videos from several different days because when i got home from vacation. I shot some video the next day i shot a video so im gonna kind of mix that up im gonna walk you through and show you the actual lawn and how i actually was able to save my lawn when almost every other lawn in this neighborhood had severe burnout from the drought conditions. So i knew i was going on vacation and you know im ocd about the worlds greatest bermuda lawn as we call it so i had to come up with a plan.
I was gonna be going for seven days. I look at the 10 day forecast and i see that stupid weather summer weather pattern. Where its 20 chance of thunderstorms.
We know what that means dont we we mean that means that all these storms are gonna go all around our yard and drench down in other peoples yards and its gonna pass our yard by i swear to god that happened yesterday. I had six thunderstorms come by here go right around my house. I didnt get an ounce of rain and the swimming pool filled up with leaves from all the wind.
I mean. Its just crazy. We know weve all experienced that should i turn the sprinkler systems on oh.
No theres a 30 chance of thunderstorms and you dont get a drop of rain. So let me tell you a few things that i did for the vacation. One and things you can do now to help fight that drought pat first lets talk about watering.
I went against the sort of golden rule. Which is you want to typically water your lawn heavily once a week or maybe twice a week. So give it a good soaking versus lots of light soaking and heres what i did i set my sprinkler system to run every single station for about ten minutes every single morning at about 6 am.
I think it was so every single morning. My lawn got about 10 minutes worth of water every single day while i was gone and i came home again every single yard and the neighborhood looks horrible has lots of burnout my yard looks great im gonna show it to you the next thing i did i was tempted i was worried about not cutting the lawn for a whole week be around yourself i was tempted about nook. I was worried about not cutting the lawn for a whole week.
So i was gonna have one of my guys come by and cut my grass and i said no im gonna let it get long because i know youre talking temperatures 92 to 96 degrees were playing with here i mean it was bad. It was bad temperatures. So it really was just scorching scorching hot so i said no im gonna let the grass.
Im going to my southern lengths. If you watch the bermuda grass calendar or if you watched some of our other videos that talked about how the cutting length of bermuda grass lawns. You know that i normally keep my lawn probably about an inch.
Its as low as i can go with undulations. I have around here in the way that it sculpted. But in the summer time i take it up.
I really recommend you go an extra half an inch to an extra three quarters of an inch. So im getting close to inch and 3 4. Or some places maybe two inches of bermuda grass in here.
Now. This is only during. Were talking were coming into july and august and thats the time.
I want i want to see you let this grass grow up a little bit again you might be at an inch go to an inch and three quarters. If youre an inch and a quarter go up to two inches. But you want to let it its a little bit of shade pattern.
The next thing is is because i did a real i did a real severe scalping on the lawn. I pulled up a lot of the thatch from last year. So i have not been bagging this year normally id bag.
But im rebuilding up that thatch layer so if you check your thatch layer make sure you got about a quarter of an inch of thatch on your lawn. If you dont have that you want to either just put the clippings down or mulch on either way. But the watering pattern was absolutely key on this so im gonna give you a little bit of a warning on the on the on the watering pattern.
Because a lot of diseases can start from short waters and short waters. And thats why you always want to do it in the morning. I always want to water in the morning so its not sitting there all night long.
But its probably if youre gonna go to that pattern during this drought. You probably want to put down some disease x. Now i showed that on another video talking about the granular disease x.
Or even a spray. Because short water patterns have a tendency to sort of breed funguses. Sometimes youre better off to avoid fungus is to do a real heavy water let it dry out real heavy water let it dry out and when you go to everyday pattern of watering sometimes you can sort of push fungus as long so you might want to keep that month.
The next thing you wont want to do is this is a great time now im gonna show you a shot a video. Im going to show you some of the hotspots. Ive got a few hot spots over in here because about these trees.
Ive got roots and ive got rocks over here. And i my sprinkler system doesnt reach over here so were talking about top dressing. This is a good time to come in if you see these hot spots.
You want to put you want to get you actually want to get potting soil. And ill explain that here in a second get some get some cheap on sale. Potting soil.
Mix and put down about a half. An inch sprinkle it on top of these hot spots and thatll help rebuild that organic matter remember whats going on here on these hot spots is is you dont have soil you dont have deep soil. Where the roots can really go down theres either rocks.
Theres something underneath the soil in these hotspots thats causing it so unless youre gonna dig up that hole on and rebuild it instead of going down you have to build up so you do need to top dress. You need to put down a little bit of top dressing. You can do that about a half inch at a time half inch at a time.
We just keep tops and this section over here. Really has come back kind of nicely. Because ive been doing that to it so anyways let me go ahead and ill just well walk through this video.
And ill show you what i came home to cutting everything what the lawn looks like almost every lawn in my neighborhood is burned out when we drove back in here we got back yesterday afternoon and when we drove in our subdivision. I went holy cow and there were a handful of lawns in our neighborhood. That are really really kept very well theyre bermuda theyre cut.
Very short the people really care about their lawns you can tell and when i was driving in man. Ill tell you what it was just half. The lawns were just solid brown.
I was like oh no did my plan work for my vacation. Getaway and i think as you can tell from behind me. My plan worked so the first thing.
Im gonna do is just real quick is oh by the way. Weve got a new website up if you havent gone to the new website. How to calm go to the website.
The reason really why i have that website is so that i can do updates and put additional information on there so when you go to the website. If i put up a video and the information has changed or someones asking questions about something you can go on their website. You can get updates on the videos.
Updates on products. I can put additional links. Its a really good resource.
So go to how to dr. Calm. And anyway.
Some great little website. And also click that little red button. Here subscribe because weve got 22 videos coming out over the next two months.
I think it is and hopefully itll help so anyways. Its early morning its 6 30. In the morning.
I think 6 45. And i really dont have any mosquitoes because i use my must be mosquito spray several weeks ago. And i shouldnt be able to be standing here.
Because i should have be eaten alive by mosquitoes right now because we just had our first rain yesterday anyways so i just got home and heres my lawn now theres due on it. But i came home last night this long looking absolutely gorgeous. If you take the dew off of it you can see that its thick that this lawn is thick and lush and just absolutely beautiful to long for bermuda maybe so.
But theres a reason for that and thats because one of the four i went on vacation. I had to make the call of do i cut this and i did cut it i cut it fairly low. But i didnt cut it while i was gone and the reason.
Why the reason why is because i looked at the 10 day forecast and i knew we hadnt had rain in four days. And i was gonna be gone. 7 days so thats 11 days without rain and i knew the temperature was gonna be 92 93 94 brutally hot conditions so what i did was as i cut my lawn.
I havent cut my lawn for seven days. I believe it is and when i cut it i caught it cut it at a moderately low light. I cut it out about an inch inch and a quarter is where i cut it i didnt take it down to an inch.
I left at about inch and a quarter and i set my sprinkler system thats the key to it is i have a sprinkler. System i set my sprinkler system to come on every. Day 6 am and water each station for 12.
Minutes only so every morning at 6 am. My sprinkler station came on and gave my lawn 12 minutes of water every single morning and that along with not taking you not cutting it during this condition its what saved my lawn. It was the combination of the two.
But let me show you the one area of my lawn. If youve watched any of my videos youll know that this area over here has a bunch of rocks and see these trees up here. And it has a bunch of roots growing out here.
So i have very little shallow organic matter over here and you can see in my lawn. What area burned out this area burned down in my lawn over here alright. So im all covered in sweat.
So what does that mean that means that ive cut the grass. So the question is when i come back again as i said in my previous videos about weather patterns. Ive lived by the 10 day forecast thats what determines what i do when i cut so i left it a little bit longer.
But i didnt leave it too long so let me show you the cut again. Im lucky because i have a sprinkler system. But this is my cut right here and ill show it to you up close.
So here is my cut and its about man. Its almost 2 inches. So im getting close to 2 inches.
This is my just summer drought cut or im gonna come up to about 2 inches. I got a nice thick bermuda the sunshine can hit these blades it cannot reach these roots and dry them out in the majority of areas. I do have some weak spots.
But i want to give you one tip one of my one of my pet peeves is scout wheels that dont have fine tuned adjustments. I dont know if any company that really makes them that has really fine tune adjustments on their scout wheels. I think actually husqvarna might have a little clicking system on there but usually just have holes so i raised my mower deck up two notches on a john which is like half an inch quarter inch adjustments and the problem is is i really cant find to my scalp wheels.
And i live by my scalp wheels. Its one of the main reasons. Why i bought my my mower.
So when i did that when i raised my deck up my scalp wheels also come up and they give me less protection and i really dont have a way to drop them and look what happened down here man can you tell im ocd because. I just down here right here i got a little bit of this undulation in here stupid stupid scout wheel decks that just friggin drives me crazy down here thats stupid things but the rest of the lawn looks pretty darn good considering that the majority of wands in the neighborhood are solid brown right now and ive got and ive got that ive got a nice thick green bermuda lawn so again heavy drought conditions let the lawn come up a bit raise it up about half an inch from where you normally are cutting water as much as you can normally. I say one inch per week.
But under drought conditions i love the early morning i love that early morning repeated pattern. Im gonna show you one more thing on the yard that i came back and i saw saw a little bit of fungus starting in an area and ill tell you why i think it why it started let me walk over there alright. So heres the backyard honey.
It looks okay again. Im i did a pretty heavy cut. So im gonna have some im gonna have some scout marks in here.
But i mean you got a mint thats pretty darn good looking for being on vacation for a week and then doing coming back and doing one cut in a drought condition. Where we had one rain over what 14 days and in 90 plus degree temps like a real lucky with the flower gardens. A flower garden survived vegetable gardens are doing well look at a if you watch the tomato video earlier look at these things look at these monsters now remember these things if you watched it these things where 18 inches tall.
Now look at them theyre all over my head. So ive got over six foot. Tomatoes.
That i got to start retaining in here. Ive already pulled three or four tomatoes cucumbers like crazy. Weve already pulled just out of these two plants right here ive pulled 14.
Cucumbers cucumber plants are weird they they have a tendency to come and go come and go. But you can see cucumbers all over here look at them inside there cucumbers all over. Ive already pulled some peppers off of here got pulled hot peppers.
Ive got green peppers coming out so peppers everythings doing well put the lawn looks really great now. I did see this see these little brown dots here. So im looking at this thing.
Well is that grubs or is that a little bit of brown spot disease. So you can see it here it almost looks like a burnout because its on the tips. So i dont know what that is to be honest.
I really dont so ive got a little bit disease x left on a bag so im gonna come out. Im gonna put some granular disease x. On here.
Just its just in this one just in this one area right in here. But you can see the lawn. Thats long.
She looks really good again under the conditions the conditions being 14 days no rain 91 to 96 degree temperatures me being gone on vacation having a nut cut that is really good looking and again. If you watch the summer fertilizer video. I put out my lure gnite and the spray.
I did some heavy patterns over here. But im i dont see any differences over here yet with my heavy milorganite and im gonna wait let it grow up a little bit its not fair to do that again if you watch the sprinkler head video repair video remember these these lines are in here. Those lines are almost all gone this major valve repair thats cool thats getting ready to be going here and you put a little more soil there.
But again i want you to see the one spot. This is what everyone elses lawn looks like this is ive got tree roots and rocks over here and see the difference see how thats burning out. We got brown spots.
All through right in this one area. So and thats due to poor soil conditions. And i dont have a sprinkler system that reaches back over there anyways guys if youre in summer drought conditions bring like i said if you look at the bermudagrass calendar.
Which is our most popular panel which our most popular video itll tell talk to you about this. But it talks about the summer drought conditions. Letting that lawn come up without an extra half an inch or 3 4.
Of an inch or so to shade out those roots and to keep that soil to keep that moisture in place. If you dont have a good thatch layer built up dont bag your clippings. Until your fat layer builds up this year.
Im not bagging why you know why will you watch the scout video. If you watch the scalp video. I scalped that living hell out of this yard.
And i picked up holes all that thatch so im rebuilding my thatch later this year last year. I had to bag this year. Im not really bagging a whole bunch so again fighting that drought try that early morning rain pattern.
Just be careful of disease disease patterns that might pop up be careful of disease patterns that might pop up when youre doing that early morning. Because youre repeatedly watering or peat early water and youre not giving that deep water and then letting it dry out so that can cause them to these problems. But again.
Those are easily treated and prevented anyways guys a bunch more videos coming up talk to you later doc you music. .
