“John enjoys smither here and three years ago. You re not gonna believe this john john died. He and some friends were on a frozen lake in missouri. When the gave way john was underwater for 15 minutes.
Several people saw him go into the freezing water. And called 911 take a listen okay how long have they been in the water. I ll say two three minutes. Two boys are both of their heads still above water.
Yeah sure icicles on them from being submerged for so long he didn t have a pulse cold water works great because he your body begins to shut down so all his vital organs were beginning to be in soft storage and survival mode. So that s right john was pulled from the bottom of the lake and rushed to the hospital. It was there that doctors declared him dead. Now john was in the hospital bed with no pulse.
You see there and jois his mother. Prayed for her son. Almost an hour later his heart started to beat again and doctors called it a miracle. Now joyce has written a book about that experience then possible the miraculous story of a mother s faith and her child s resurrection.
And it s also coming to the big screen as well and they both join us here. And i have to say a we re happy that you re here john. But tomorrow is the anniversary of when this happened so do you remember that day. Yes.
You don t expect to be in that situation..
We all thought that we were just going to have fun to celebrate it s a holiday. We just want a basketball game so we were just gonna have a good time. But we weren t expecting that one wrong move. We would be all one second away from all dying.
And there s a picture of you on the ice. You re on the right so from that moment it cracked your other two friends that photo actually was the night before okay so that would that was after the game. When we all got to his house that s when the ice was a lot thicker was a lot colder that day the next day was 60 degrees. And the ice has started to melt and we could still step on it.
But it was starting to give way and water was going on top of it do you remember anything when you went in the water. I remember the screams call 9 1. 1. I don t want to die to that shot right.
There of the being underwater and you know going above the ice and fighting for your life. And just the burning sensation of the ice cutting your skin. And you trying to grab hold of it and pushing ice up for your buddy next to you and stuff. Like that did you think you were gonna die in those moments.
You don t you don t remember what you think. But i didn t know that i was gonna die. I don t think that my concern was that i was gonna die. Think my concern was the people around me because what my friends reported to the paramedics was that i was pushing ice up for josh rieger.
Who was out with me so i don t think in that moment..
I was thinking about it and so as a mom choice. When did you get that phone call. I got that phone call almost 30 minutes after he d gone into the water. I talked to him moments before he went into the water in fact he basically hung up the phone from me.
And the ice cracked under and he went under so that was around 11 30. They called me at 11 52. To tell me i was expecting the telephone call. Because a friend of josh s mom cindy was going to call me we were going to transfer children.
And so when she called i wasn t surprised she called but when she told me. She said. There s been an accident and i said oh you have a car accident. She said no she said the kids were out on the ice the ice broke they fell through the water and they just pulled john out of the water and he doesn t have a heartbeat you know it s the telephone call that no parent ever wants to get and so it was you know you go into survival mode.
At that point in time. So you get to the hospital. And you re crying right now. And i my heart goes out to you as a mom because this isn t your right.
It s no phone call a mom wants to get right so you get to the hospital. And what happens when you walk in the door. And you see joe i m sitting there and laying in that bed. Oh.
I wasn t going to give up i all the way to the hospital..
I was praying god you can t have my son please you gave us him as a gift you can t take him away from me so when i walked in the room. I mean it was upsetting and i was crying because if i hadn t gone on. But i had an assurance that god was gonna take care of it and so when dr. Sutter walked over to me and said you can go and talk to your son he was doing that because he was getting ready to call time of death.
And that was going to be my time to say goodbye to him that never crossed my mind so when i walked up to the end of the bed. And i touched his feet. Which was the only part that was uncovered and they were cold and gray and i just knew. It was time to be tough and desperate with god so i started praying holy spirit please come and give me back my son and within moments of that he started to having a heart beat.
And his charge nurse had been standing there for 27 minutes. With her finger on a pulse. Looking for a pulse. And it didn t come and so when it came she was so shocked and i could still remember very vividly her saying.
I ve got a pulse. I ve got a pulse. I mean each time. She said.
It she was so stunned that it happened to me everything was okay after that was going to be okay. The doctors weren t quite on that page with me well you don t know that after you don t know how his body or her brain is gonna write and we re looking at a picture of all your buddies and husband do you remember waking up. I remember seeing three people. Former children s pastor.
A good family friend and my uncle don and then finally when they were starting to back me off the propofol..
I was scared like you see in the tv shows of the patient waking up and seeing just the hospital ceiling. And that s what i saw and i was just i want to know does everybody know i m here am. I okay what i knew i had fell in the lake. But i want i didn t know that like how severe.
It was so i was really scared at that time. But mom was there and she kind of explained it to me. And told. Me that everything was gonna be okay.
