“Midi keyboard comes nwith its own software suite making it a turnkey soft synth nsolution nsolution for dj producers. We re taking a look at the nkomplete kontrol s49 mk2 native instruments. It s now got two high nres displays on board plus lots of encoders buttons and transports and utility control. It also ships with nkomplete kontrol software which integrates tightly nwith the hardware keyboard letting you easily audition.
Nand manage your sounds. We ll take an overview of nthe unit in this video. And see how it works ninside. A daw environment like ableton live let s dive right in the native instruments nkomplete kontrol s49 mk2 is a four octave keyboard controller meant to be used with na laptop running a daw it s got eight rotary knobs on board two high resolution.
Ndisplays transport controls scale and arpeggiator buttons a four way multipurpose nrotary knob and two mod wheels plus a mod touch strip. It ships with komplete kontrol software as i mentioned. Which is nlike a sound librarian it lets you manage and browse nthrough. All the patches and samples that are navailable in your collection of nks compatible soft synth and plug ins for those who don t know nks is the native kontrol standard it lets the complete keyboard nand.
The machine drum pad connect to synths and plug ins. Nfrom third party developers. Now the idea behind bundling nthe komplete kontrol keyboard with komplete kontrol software is that the keyboard gives you nthe hands on physical access to the commands and nsounds in the software basically giving you that turnkey synth studio in a box solution regardless of which daw you produce in the kontrol s49 mk2 nhas semi weighted keys and a fatar keybed that nfeels great to play on you don t get that cheap plasticky feel that some midi keyboard controllers give and each key also has na light near the top and the lights change colour depending on what function you ve got them set to for example by default nthey glow brighter when you press on a key but you can change the lights to show which piano keys belong nto a particular scale you ve chosen for example let s try that right now piano keys play yeah. So basically all the keys work because we haven t npicked a scale just yet now in order to pick a scale.
All you got to do is to hold ndown the shift button over here and press the scale button and now we re going to be nbrought to the scale menu of the komplete kontrol s49. Keyboard. Now you can change ndifferent parameters. Here in order to sort of restrict the keys.
That are going to be playable nover on the keyboard. So for example you can nchange the root note. You can choose c c. Sharp.
Nbasically. All the root notes that are available in western nmusic. It s going to be there and then you can choose the type as well chromatic major minor and all of its derivatives over here. And you can also choose a bank.
Which basically sort of ncategorises all the different types of music scales that are available there you go you even nhave rolled music in here different types of modes and nall that other good stuff..
So let s try using this scale mode over here for the keyboard. So i am going to pick a scale. Let s just use c. Major.
Just so it s easy that basically means nthat. All the white keys are going to be playable nso. Let s go ahead and exit and now i still don t nhave scale mode enabled. So.
That means the black keys nstill work piano keys play . But if i turn on scale mode. Nby pressing the scale button now you can see that the lights over here for the black keys are not lit. And that means that nthese are not playable you re not going to be hearing.
Those notes instead you re just ngoing to hear the notes in the c major scale piano keys play and even if i press. The nblack key over here this goes to d. And if i press this one this goes to e. So basically what it does nis.
It removes all the notes that are not part of the scale. So you re basically going nto be playing in key regardless of whichever npiano key. You press. Piano keys play i can do nthis and know that everything is going to be in c.
Major right another cool feature that you won t find on many midi keyboard controllers is the on board arpeggiator and this lets you play a nseries of notes repeatedly. Even if you re just pressing ndown on one piano key let s try that so in order to access the arpeggiator. I just need to press the narp button over here on the top of the keyboard there we go and now whenever i press a piano key piano key plays one note rapidly it ll play even notes automatically and in sequence. And i can try nplaying two notes if i like piano keys play two notes rapidly.
I can press three notes piano keys play three notes rapidly. I can do like a full chord here piano keys play yeah. So that s what an arppegiator does and the cool thing about nthe onboard arpeggiator here is that you can edit its parameters. So you can determine you know the sequence of notes.
The ntypes of notes that it plays and all that good stuff so in order to access that editor..
All you got to do is hold the shift button and press. The arp button over here and now you re going to be nbrought to the arpeggiator menu and then you can choose the different types of narpeggiator behaviours. So let s try messing around with it i m going to change a type over nhere let s try up and down. I can change the rhythm from a 16th note.
Let s try for like maybe nan eighth note over there and then for the sequence. I can even choose a different sequence of notes here. Which will give it a ndifferent rhythmic flavour. So let s try sequence number three and you ve got other nparameters that you can change swing octaves.
Dynamic and gate. Let s not mess around with that anymore. Let s just change those parameters that we ve already modified nand. Let s hear how it sounds piano keys play yeah.
So just by making those changes suddenly you ve got this nentirely. Different flavour to the arp that we were playing earlier piano keys play and i can change them on nthe fly. If i want to piano keys play quickly this would sound. Really cool nif.
I had a drum beat going should ve added a loop there. But yeah basically that s how nthe arpeggiator works and again you don t find this in a lot of midi keyboard ncontrollers out there so it s really cool that the komplete kontrol ns49 mk2 has it on board plus. It s pretty configurable and the sequences that are nbuilt into it sound pretty cool you can use it for ndifferent styles of music and well it really is up nto you and your creativity. How you want to mix this ninto your production or in your life plan you can sort and browse for nsounds using the screens.
And you can navigate and nmake changes using the knobs over here below the screens as well as the buttons non top of the screens. You can even audition sounds nas you scroll through them. Using the chunky browse nencoder over here. Provided you re using komplete kontrol.
This is the single biggest benefit of using this keyboard over others. As it can be time consuming just looking for the perfect patch to tweak nand use in your production. So. This alone has just saved nme.
So much time and effort..
And it really encourages you to use the komplete kontrol nplug in and the app. Not only for browsing your sounds. But also to stay organised nwith all your patches. Because you re able to sort nthrough.
Them using tags apart from working tightly with the komplete kontrol software. The komplete kontrol s49 mk2 also integrates nicely with ableton live. Although in a more basic nand. Fundamental way it can play stop and set live to record just by pressing the ntransport buttons over here on top of the keyboard as well as other basic commands like chaining.
A click track on a rough. Enabling or disabling loops quantizing. A set of notes and so on it. Even controls live s mixer nusing.
The knobs over here. Let s see how that works right now just by using the encoder nover here on the right. Which is a four way nrotary. So i can do this i can scroll through my tracks over here and as i mentioned i ve nalso got my transport controls over here in the upper left screen.
So i can play happy music nplays and i can stop i can record i. Can turn nthe metronome on or off metronome plays just nlike that super simple. And i can also set the loop and quantise and all nthat other good stuff. And i also have a mute and nsolo button over here so let s say i want to mute this track that i ve got highlighted let s say i don t want to hear nthis piano sound music plays just click mute or let s nsay.
I want to mute this bass. Just like that as you may notice. I am. Still looking at my laptop screen right now.
And the cool thing about the integration of this keyboard with ableton live. Is you can actually view your tracks over here on the high nresolution displays. So let s try that out i m ngoing to hit play over here happy music plays and nwhat i m going to do now is press the mixer button nover here on the upper right and now we re going to be nable to see our tracks over here on the screen. And i can use the knobs over nhere to adjust the volume.
So let s say i want to make nthe drums..
A little bit louder just like that i can use the knobs. I can also scroll to the right and let s say i want to nmake the vocals softer for some reason. I don t nwant. It to be that loud here you go i m going to do just that and you know this is a npretty small project.
It s a remix. I m working on so that s why i don t have na lot of tracks right now. But yeah. The cool thing is that you can view your tracks over here on the display.
And it brings tighter integration with ni s own komplete kontrol software thanks to the new displays. There are tonnes of other nkeyboard controllers out there. But this hardware software ncombo is just so tough to beat. It s pricey though coming nin a just under 600 bucks.
So it might be too expensive for bedroom producers on a budget. So i think the streamlined na series keyboards. Which native instruments released in 2018 might be the better option. If you ve got the budget for nit.
Though go ahead and get it this comes highly recommended. If you re a piano player and want greater control and expression. You might want to check out nthe komplete. Kontrol s61 mk2.
Which has 61 keys or the nkomplete kontrol s88 mk2. Which has 88 keys like full piano. And it s got real piano action on it so that s it for this nshort. Talkthrough video of the native instruments nkomplete kontrol s49 mk2.
