Today, bluevelvetrestaurant.com would like to introduce to you Montblanc 149 – Diplomat s Pen. Following along are instructions in the video below:
“Guys. I m a forester here with a review of my very first grail fountain fountain pen and it s the mont blanc. Meister stuck 149 now. I m still new to fountain pens.
But i m trying to learn from my knife collecting and be very selective about the fountain pens that i buy i may only buy two or three fountain pens in a year s time. But i guarantee you that they ll all be keepers. Now this one forty nine is i think the most iconic fountain pen of all time. It s referred to generally as the diplomats pin.
Because politicians use it to sign legislation and important documents such as international treaties now in my writing sample. I m going to give you a famous quote and a picture. That s related to this model pin. The 149 let s go inside.
Where it s a little bit warmer and take a closer look at this classic beauty. Okay first of all i ll just give you a good look at this 149. While i tell you how i came about it i was visiting the truth. A pen store in greenville.
South carolina. And i was looking not for this pen. But for a sailor king of pen. They didn t have the king of pen in stock.
But they did have two vintage montblanc 149 now. I was only interested in this one because it had a fine nib as is stamped right. There. The other one had a medium nib.
I don t know the history of this pen. But it supposedly had never been inked up before more than likely. It was just in somebody s collection and had not been used now that s not going to be the case with me as i plan to use this pen regularly my only clue is to win..
It was made is right here on the cap ring where it says west germany. And i m going to trust that you can see that now german reunification took place in 1990. So i m guessing that this pen was made sometime in the late 1980s. One thing that i m puzzled about though is that i haven t been able to find a serial number anywhere on the pen.
If anybody can weigh in on the serial. Number. Please comment below. Now my pen came with this box.
Which i personally don t think is the original packaging. Does say mont blanc on the front. The only other writing is here on the back where it says printed in germany. But i ve been led to believe that a bottle of ink was included with pens of this era and this packaging right here is nowhere near large enough to accommodate a bottle of ink also the clip that holds the pin in place is much too tight for this pen the pen is really hard to get into that clip.
But comment below if you have any information on the original packaging. I m just curious let s take a closer look at this pen starting with the cap and the white star emblem on the top of the cap was a brilliant move by mont blanc. As i think. It s the most recognizable feature on not just this.
But any pen and it s visible while the pens in the pocket. The white star represents the peak of mount blanc. Which is the highest mountain in the alps. Here s a google earth view of mont blanc.
And here s the lat long for it right here in case. You want to go look at it yourself. But mont blanc falls on the border of france and. Italy and it s a popular mountain to climb 20000.
People climbed the 4810 metre summit each year and by the way i didn t have to look that height up. I ll tell you more about that later but let me give you a 360 degree look from the top of the mountain and if you come up here to street view and click on street view. You can see where you can drag that icon to get a the street view look you ll notice this straight line right here that runs across the mountain..
It looks like well it doesn t it actually runs under the mountain that s the mont blanc tunnel. And then you ll also see this path right over here that goes to the summit. So let s drag the icon over to that path and that s a hiking path. And there we are with a group of people nearing the summit and that looks like it s pretty dangerous okay.
I ve actually walked this virtually and so i m gonna walk it not not necessarily right now for you. But i m gonna go to the summit and then give you a 360 degree look from the top okay it took me a little while to walk up that path. But i m on the summit now i m looking north into switzerland and i m gonna pan around okay now we re looking into the sun into the east and that s into italy and now we re looking south and coming on around looking into france and now we re looking back into switzerland looking north that s pretty neat check it out for yourself okay enough sightseeing back to the pin review. But i thought that was interesting now the body of this pin is made of precious resin.
That goes for the cap as well as for the barrel. You know. This is a traditional cigar shaped pin. And i like traditional conservative designs.
The cap is rounded at the end and then it has a very subtle increase in diameter through this section. The clip is the standard mont blanc clip. It has just the right amount of tension it goes in and out of my pocket. Very easily now there are three bands at the base of the cap or narrower and then a wider band in the middle.
And all the trim on this pin is gold coated. Now the writing on the band. I ll get to a place where i hope that you can see it. But it says mont blanc meister stuck number 149 and we re back to the beginning.
And i will say say that all the writing on this pen is very precise now there s a pretty big step down the diameter from the cap down to the pen barrel the barrel is straight until right above this barrel ring right here. When there s a subtle taper that begins now this is a piston filler and the piston cap right here fits very tight up to that barrel ring. I will say that i had reservations about how much effort that it took to operate this piston in the store when i bought the pen. I bought it with the stipulation that that piston be serviced by an authorized agent and true they did send it off and i m happy to say that it works just fine.
Now now the cap comes off with one complete turn. And it reveals the largest nib that s in my pen collection now this is a beautiful two toned 14 karat gold nib. It has that snow cap logo with an m inside for montblanc and here s why i knew the height of mont blanc..
You ll see the numbers written right. There 4810 that s the number of meters to the summit of mont blanc mountain actually the recorded height of the peak changes from time to time because of the thickness of the ice cap. But it ll always be four thousand eight hundred and ten meters to me now this section is right here is five eighths of an inch long and it s 1 2. Of an inch wide.
It has a definite lip right here on the end. And it s very comfortable for me to hold there s a very slight step up to the threads right here. And the threads are very comfortable to the touch. They re not sharp at all you see the sink window right here.
And it works well it works well enough for me to tell that i m just about out of ink. Which is fine. I ve been using mont blanc irish green ink. But i want to try a blue or a black ink in this pen next now let me give you a size comparison to a couple of other pens.
Which are fairly well known fairly common and the first one is this pilot custom 8 to 3. And let me line those up for you can tell they re about the right length. But the montblanc is much wider much more substantial and here s the lommy mm here again they don t vary that much in length. But the limey mm is even smaller in diameter and let me put a 1 other one up here and that s a pilot metropolitan and the metropolitan.
I ll say is definitely too small for my hands. I can write with it but it is too small and too small for my hands. And now it s time for a writing sample and i ll be riding on my rodeo dot grid notepad and by now i think everybody knows what this pin is it s a multi block meister stuck 149 there it has a fine 14 karat gold nib and i m riding with mont blanc irish green ink and this is the smoothest niv. I think i have in my collection.
And it should be it writes in every direction. There s no scratching this at all and it closed just the right amount of ink not too wet not too dry now. It s a pleasure to write with i m going to use a short quote that comes from a well known photo of president john f. Kennedy.
Handing his 1 49. To german chancellor adenauer. Who couldn t locate his pen to sign the golden book of a city that they were visiting it s like i say..
This is a very short quote and here s the picture by the way. And now for the quote set by john f. Kennedy. And it was said on june.
The 23rd 1963. Now i was thinking about it president kennedy died later that year on november. The 22nd 1963 and there are very few events that i remember where i was at the time that occurred or at the time. I heard about it one was on 9 11.
A lot of us remember that one another was when i heard that elvis presley had died. I was on the road driving between washington and greenville north carolina at the time i worked for warehouser. But the first time was in the third grade in tawanda illinois. When president kennedy was shot they let school out and i ran all the way home and watch news coverage on tv comment below which events you remember where you were but let s get back to the summary of this iconic pin.
So let me summarize my thoughts on this iconic pin. The 149 the two most obvious things about this pin are its size and its price and i haven t mentioned price yet. This is a large pin. I ve been using it for 2 3.
Weeks now and i ve been alternating between this and other sized pins just for comparison. I can see where it would be much too large for someone with small hands. It s comfortable in my large hands. But an ideal sized pin might be just a tad.
Smaller on price it would be difficult for me to justify buying a new 149 this one was over 30 years old it still wasn t cheap. But i did get it at a nice discount for an iconic pen that writes and looks as good as a new pen now this is a pin that i ll carry and use regularly and if you need a pen when signing a golden book and i m around i might even offer to help you out y all. ” ..
