“Web videos review is going to be on wednesday and i m probably going to to start doing three videos. A week again and one of those videos probably would be just one of these writing tips. It could be adding one of the three just when i need a little bit of a break because these are rather easy to make and today. We re going to talk about a very niche.
Kind of topic how to do a body swap episode or a body swap plot. Correctly did you ever have one of those plots or storylines that you really like more for the concept that rather than the execution. I don t mean just in a specific episode of a specific show just a general plotline that no one seems to run with properly for me. It s the body swap episode.
I ve wanted to do a review on a body swap episode for the longest time and admirable for something they got everything right or an atrocity for one that just didn t understand the concept and completely wasted. It i couldn t find either. I mean teen titans did something wrong on this plot and breadwinners did something correct in this plots that s how mad i guess. The concept comes together most shows and that s really sad since body swap stories have a lot of potential at most media doesn t know or doesn t want to tap into the two main draws.
The writer usually has to make a body swap lot is too close in the relationship between two characters or just tell a lot of jokes have a lot of comedy. A boy and a girl are swapped or an adult and a child or both of those together or a human and an animal a third reason. Though also presents itself to me to make one person s mundane life become a very difficult obstacle. It s very hard to live as someone else.
Especially. When you don t have the experience that they ve had we ll be talking about all three of these drawers and keep in mind. I am. An animation critic these ideas are largely for body swap stories in animation.
But they could probably work in other mediums like live action or movies or hell. Maybe even video games like off the top of my head. I can think of it being like a status affecting an rpg where two characters have their same stats. But have the abilities of the other character.
But back to animation and speaking of animation. There is one problem that is unique to body swap stories in cartoons it absolutely has to stop it ducks points immediately on your body swap story and is totally grown worthy if you don t know by now that problem is the voices. I understand what s happening well when i talk i hear my own angelic voice. But it s coming out of your awkward and adolescent warps body.
Well i really like the body swap trope. I do not like the voices are mental show up at all..
What is essentially done is let s use gravity falls for example. Even though dipper and mabel s body. He still has dippers voice. While it might and the surface seem is his improvement in terms of comedy.
After all how funny would it be if a guy s voice came out of a girl. It s sacrificing long term for short term even in the terms of comedy. There is much more potential for jokes when it s absolutely impossible for someone to prove that they are not who they appear to be characters would have to be out of character stupid in order to continue thinking. That there s nothing out of the ordinary with a girl having an insanely deeper voice and if this change is just for the audience once again that s cheating when you do this your episode is harmed as a result and the body swap concept is not used to its fullest potential.
Although there might be exceptions. When you can get away with this. If person a has a special ability or power. That takes years to master and person b ends up in their body that can render that ability unpredictable.
If not useless. And that can become the conflict. It s not an excuse for the voices swapping. But it will mitigate the damage.
Let s call it this is why switch from the original teen titans. Is one of the best examples of the body swap lot. Even though they still get the voice is wrong yes. I know the back story behind and i don t care by the way if you want to see boys vs girls from teen titans go downright switched is by far the superior option.
I do know there s a reason for this voice thing that is virtually only present in animation. Some live action shows may do it for a quick gag. But they will eventually drop the voices or mental trope. This is not because people think the kids wouldn t know who is who during the body swap.
It s because this is the easy way out it s easy to switch around voices in animation. What s hard to do is match someone else s speaking style. Try talking in someone else s accents like a native speaker and you ll see what i m talking about it s tough. I get it.
But sometimes you got to do a hard work to pull things off go the extra mile. The problem..
That s presented here is that it adds another layer of disbelief. When you do this. And the point of telling. The story is to maintain the illusion as much as possible remove as much suspension of disbelief as possible yes people can t swap bodies in real life you re already and you re already playing with the fictional trope that s not an excuse either the disney cartoons love to use the body swap storyline as most of their non slice of life cartoons have had at least one episode and almost each and every one of them as the characters keep their own voices as they switch bodies.
Lilo and stitch can possible gravity falls darkwing duck jake long it s getting annoying. This makes it really strange to me. Because when they re live action shows do this like though. The future.
The voices do not switch. Oh yeah. That would be more work for the live action department. Seriously.
The only animated body swap episode that i could find that didn t have the voices swapped with the minds was the replacements doing this might not make your body swap episode. The greatest thing ever. But it will keep yourself ahead of the curb and at this point. Sadly it ll make you stand out the next issue that came up in mediocre body swap.
Episodes. Was time. Mediocre. Body swap episodes.
Don t use their time. Wisely. At all whether you have 11 minutes or 22 minutes. You want to get into the body swap as fast as possible.
But you do not want to rush the catalyst. This is why carpe diem from gravity falls suffers a lot and becomes a weaker gravity falls episode and a weaker body swap episode. They spend so long establishing dipper and mabel s arguments and pieces of their life. That once they finally do switch.
We re halfway through the episode. It may seem you need to establish lots..
But you don t on the contrary. There s code lyoko. Who gets the step perfectly in their 22 minute body swap episode how long is it until we re here with the swap. The episode is called a fine mess.
Odd switches bodies with yumi 20 seconds in they explain the catalyst with the bodies already swapped while they still do the voice thing is a perfect example. Why you don t need to bog us down with the details in media res is a good option for the story. But it s still not entirely necessary just get it over with quickly and deal with a problem later. If you know what i m getting at chances are we already know who these characters are and we know how they contrast.
We know how dipper and mabel contrast. One of the most important rules of storytelling is to start as late into the story as possible and the second being swapped seems to be that point literally you could start an episode to character swap and have them try to figure out why either in each other s bodies this obviously does not apply to movies. Where we don t know who the characters are this is for standalone episode. However these are general problems and easy to get around how your body swap episode.
Lives or dies. 90 of the time. Depends on how the characters. Contrast.
There are two main ways to come up with a good swap based on appearance or based on personality based on appearance is probably going to be the easter of the two as long as you re comfortable with playing with stereotypes by playing with stereotypes. You use them without pissing people off essentially these kind of stories are the boys swapping with the girl. The parents swapping with the child s the owner swapping with a pet or some combination. The more different lives.
The characters lead the better getting two characters leading roughly the same life is almost a death sentence. Unless the personalities contrast enough once again. We re looking at carpe diem. The personalities is like the jock swapping with the nerd.
The goof off swapping with the worker you could have you can have a prince and a popper story which swap you go with is probably gonna depend on when you re going for humor or if you re going for insight or if you re clever enough to write for tension. Mostly scenarios are flexible to do them all apparent. Where the child s can lead to comedy with a classic role reversal power. It can lead to tension as the child to sit with responsibility and insight as they learn to get along as for the actual applause and not just the plot concept.
There are generally four roads. I see people take the first is the characters try to live each other s lives as they wait for the change to reverse..
It s a little arbitrary. But against the job done the second is the characters actively go after who change them or they try to find an artifact to undo it these two usually run together in our different parts of the same episode. The third option is that the two characters aren t getting along and want to sabotage each other that would remove the excuse of why they can t just swap back at any time. The fourth option.
Though rarely seen is one characters happy with their new life and becomes. The antagonist trying to stop the switchback. This is very rarely seen and i do like it when i see it which is why i said the breadwinners episode. Does at least one thing right.
However. This is usually done with villains who want to stop the hero for good. But it could just work with an average joe who is just high on the change. These ideas sound amazingly simple right.
It s not just me have an episode with two main characters with different lives of personalities swap bodies but do not keep their original voices within two minutes of screen time and essentially have unfitting roles forced upon them it s a really simple formula. But everyone s missing that last. One ingredient. I haven t seen a single episode that did each and every one of these things correct at least in animation.
Live action has an advantage because they never did the voices are mental drove and yes. There are the series like scifo of life ones. That don t give themselves the possibilities to do a body swap episode at all so just i guess. What we re trying to get here.
Is for the voices are mental trope and the setting up the catalyst. Quickly don t underestimate your audience. They can tell who is who people are a lot more than their appearance that s kind of what these episodes are meant to prove and if you switch the voices. You kind of undermine that the switching the bodies is usually done by an excuse a macguffin it s in all honesty.
It s not really important lord of the rings isn t exactly about the ring. It s getting to the mountain in the journey. They re within a body swap story is not about how the characters swap bodies. It s about that having swapped bodies like i just really want to see her really good.
But he swapped episode that s that s pretty much what this comes down to don t make me have to write one myself you ” ..
