“Video is off to a great start i m not joking here is the lovely lovely tesla car that we need to take but it is busy updating it ca start before the update is finished it s yellow it s gorgeous. It s brand new the adventure begins incredible in a moment. We re going to enter the elipson assembly plant where the brand s turntables are made along with some rather extraordinary speakers. There will be interviews in this video.
It s rare that you get to see behind the scenes you re going to see the brand new site. They ve only been here for three months. The old elipson assembly. Plant is now a warehouse behind me the magic of filming live.
It s the factory home theater hi fi television headphones vinyl let s go you re going to learn some amazing things really i m certain of it certain in this factory. You ll get to see three iconic elipson speakers being made the legacy 3210s that cost around 2600. A pair. The legacy 3220s that cost around 4600 a pair and the stars of the show.
The enormous legacy 3230s amazing performers that cost 7600 per pair and that are for me archetypal. Elipson speakers out of all the ranges that we ll be discussing in this video. The 3230 model is the only one to use the sphere concept. Which for me is the elipson tradition.
Just look at how beautiful this product is four of these can be made in an hour. So it s not easy to make otherwise people take their time. There is no timer. It s not an assembly line they work to make sure that it looks good that it is well assembled.
And so that it sounds divine above all look at how gorgeous. They are there are nine full time employees here in the factory. It s small it s almost like a family business. It s artisanal.
There are also three people there for accounting quality control and assembly. That s how it works so there are 12 people working full time here at the moment. And it s going to get bigger. Very soon.
It s only the beginning for elipson. Hello hello. Pp. How are you doing i m fine.
How are you so. What s your name philippe philippe. Who penna philippe penna r. D.
Manager for elipson france. So. What do you do here. Philippe.
I m the head of acoustic development for elipson. We don t interview just anyone so you design the products technically and acoustically speaking you design them acoustically yes. There is a team of product designers that i work with and we design the product together. I m in charge of acoustic development.
So you re pretty familiar with the elipson brand. Yes can you tell us a bit about the history of this brand. It s a french brand people have heard the name and might know some of the products. When did the adventure start it started in 1938 at first it was called multimoteurs and it produced motors for electric toy.
Trains. The brand then began to branch out and created the as50 speaker. It was mr. Bazin and mr.
Latour they created a spherical speaker with an oval reflector and then the very first speaker was round. It was the sphere right from the beginning. Yes. That s right they re very fond of spheres.
So the sphere is inherent to elipson then mr. Joseph l. On joined the brand as commercial director and in 1951. The brand became elipson a contraction of wow.
I didn t even know that i knew the history of the brand with the sphere ellipse sound. We do learn things there s no question about it. What else can you tell me were there any important dates or pivotal moments for elipson because i remember something about radio. France.
Using certain speakers is that true yes so the brand s first milestones were in the 50s and 60s as soon as it became elipson they equipped the ortf radio stations and the ina with speakers you can see this is the photos from the ina for example. The idea was to create a speaker whose radiation would be free of any obstacles. Hence the sphere..
It s elegant it s visually pleasing. But it s also an acoustic feature the sound radiation is ideal. They then designed oval shaped reflectors for long ranges and to hear the spectrum of the voice. There was charles de gaulle s speech.
The shape of the religieuse speakers was designed to diffuse sound over long distances as well as short distances for studio use do you know if elipson was the only brand to use this sphere shape at the time or if there were other french or international brands. That did do you know unless. I m mistaken elispon was the first and when you look at speakers at the time they were mostly large wardrobe like cabinets. Low wide speakers that weren t very deep with big woofers elipson worked on a flowing shape.
So that the sound was ideally distributed you re fascinating this is fascinating something happened in the 80s because there are iconic models iconic elipson references that i ve heard of i m going to pretend that i don t know what they are go on so just before 1980. There was the 1303 a magnificent speaker made with a designer. It is incredible. It s up on the screen.
Now it s an incredible speaker with a symmetrical enclosure for the lows can you explain what a symmetrical enclosure is. because maybe people will learn something thanks to you so a symmetrical enclosure is when the low frequency driver isn t visible. It is at a certain height inside the speaker cabinet. It is positioned horizontally and there s a large port that retrieves the driver s front sound wave.
So it s almost like having a subwoofer that is already acoustically filtered. The speaker s phasing was adjusted. So the tweeter and midrange driver were set back from the woofer. It s visible when looking at the speaker.
It was already a floorstanding speaker with rounded edges floorstanding with rounded edges. Which is being done today elipson had already used this design in the mid 70s and 80s. Can we say that elipson was ahead of its time concerning hi fi and speakers. Because you were in my opinion with the sphere and everything it s quite incredible for its acoustic methods.
Yes. And especially esthetically today. Elipson is known around the world in the field of interior design for the beauty of its products. I m tearing up it s so great to have all of this information people might not be aware of this heritage.
This is why we wanted to do this grand d. Ballage. Unboxing. Or rather boxing here.
Because there s so much to say in this factory are there any more iconic models that come to mind for those watching important references there s the 4050 i haven t heard of the 4050. I mention the 4050 because we have released the legacy 3230 speaker. Which is inspired by the 4050. We see the 3230 in this video.
It doesn t come cheap. At the time. There was an iconic scene with patrick poivre. D.
arvor. And the 4050s. There. s also.
The 402. Which is a sphere with a small tweeter on top and a stand that lets you angle. The speaker. How you want a lot of speakers that we see it s very visually pleasing and the bs50 that looks like an urn and has a reflector we re released it and it actually sells very well internationally see how much french expertise is involved.
Here. Seeing. As you are here we can discuss 2019 and 2020 currently there are several emblematic models models that you love and that are here around us can you tell us a bit about this speaker range. The name of this range is legacy.
There are three models a compact speaker. A small floorstanding speaker and a large 3 way floorstanding speaker that uses the sphere as a nod to the 4050. It s very elegant we saw it earlier on this magnificent model is the most expensive so here is the workshop you ve got the compact 3210 and the 3220 floorstander you can also see a few 3230s. The 3230 speaker uses an amt or air motion transformer tweeter.
Which is like a pleated ribbon tweeter. The three models that you have here all have different prices can you explain the differences between the three that warrant the variation in price for the range that is manufactured here they all use the same tweeter. But the tweeter on the bigger high end 3230 model has a larger emissive surface so there s a small compact model a floorstanding. Model with a tweeter and two midbass drivers and the large floorstanding speaker.
With two 8 woofers and a sphere that holds the midrange driver and a large amt tweeter. It s currently the most expensive speaker in the range and it is made here in france in saint fargeau. It was important for us to make sure that the sound signature was always consistent from the biggest speaker down to the smallest but. It also depends on the room if.
Your listening room measures 25m . The compact speaker will probably be adequate if it is correctly positioned and powered. If the room is a bit bigger you can try the 3220 and naturally..
If your room is over 40m. The 3230 will provide looking at the prices. It depends on your budget. Too a budget.
Even though. The smallest speaker has the same sound signature as the biggest model across a certain frequency range . It will be harder for the 3210s to play mahler s symphony. N.
5. Than it will be for the 3230s mahler s symphony. N. 5.
Sounds very nice with the 3230. Who do you work for again power wise we start at 100 watts with the 3210 compact speaker . 150 watts for the middle speaker and 200 watts rms for the largest speaker come over here there are speakers here i love speakers. But i know that elipson makes a lot of other things because i ve seen you at quite a few shows.
I did a bit of research on the brand you make turntables. Several models. Which turntables do you have exactly we have nine models of turntables nine who can beat that there are other brands that can in france. I didn t say france so there s nine models do you have a rough idea of the prices for these models.
The turntables range from 280 to 800 for the riaa preamp and bluetooth options ah so you have bluetooth models. And everything elipson has been making turntables for quite a while already since 2015 for the turntables. So it hasn t actually been that long then who is this journalist. This can t be happening hang on let s go over this again you ve been making turntables for five years.
But i knew that so you have nine models. It s amazing later on we ll see somebody making a turntable here from start to finish. He s here he has all the parts to make the turntable by himself. He s very proud of what he does we ll go see him later on you ll see thank you very much for all of this information.
Pp. Thank you you re going to give us a hand later on don t worry. It was a pleasure. We re going to go take a look at the assembly line.
I m going to give you a few tips and we ll go and have a look at what everyone is doing. It s fascinating you have been captivating so have you no not me i m just here to get all the information. I can out of him do you want to know everything about the 3210 well now is the time look how beautiful they are they re here they re waiting we re going to install the drivers. I m going to tell you a bit about the tweeter.
So here is the famous pleated ribbon amt tweeter. You can see it here it s like an accordion when you unfold this accordion. You have an emissive surface two times bigger sorry three times bigger than that of a dome tweeter and this tweeter is glued to the front of the speaker with an adhesive that stays pliable and that is actually used in the automobile industry. This allows the tweeter to be vibration resistant as the tweeter is very fast.
We need a midrange driver that can keep up we chose a composite material consisting of aluminum covered with a very thin ceramic sheet. It doesn t make the cone heavy. It allows us to use two different materials for better control of the cone. Which doesn t break apart and the speed matches that of the tweeter.
There is a large magnet and a ventilated coil. That can withstand high levels of power. Now that i ve told you a bit about the drivers. We re going to look at how they re mounted.
We made a sealed enclosure for the tweeter which frees. It from the speaker s internal acoustic pressure resulting in a sound free of any micro vibrations. It s mounted here and screwed into place no air gets out it is elastically mounted using the glue. And this seal.
Here. There is an internal brace inside the speaker. The 4220 has two and the 4230 has three the driver s magnet is in direct contact with the brace. But it is decoupled by these little tabs here this mechanical continuity between the back.
And the front of the speaker. Reduces vibration and has a very good impact on the lows. It protrudes slightly here. But that won t be the case once it is screwed in what are you doing philippe i m testing the phasing of the driver.
The red wire on the red wire and the blue wire on the blue wire to see if the phase is correct. There s the cone moving worst case scenario. It doesn t explode it doesn t explode. But you never know elipson uses a lot of power.
This technique has been around for a long time. But it s great to know that important manufacturers do things that i used to do with a battery. When i was four years old it s really important to know..
It s an important part of this video. A speaker is useless without this this is the filter. It s important to know that there are different sizes. These are very powerful speakers.
But generally. It s very rare or even unheard of that speakers in this price range use this type of component. It s important that you grasp this because they seem to be insisting. The thing is this part alone costs 50 just this without the wiring look at the quality of this wiring.
It s of extraordinary quality. Really high quality. They have really pulled out all of the stops because we don t want such an extraordinary structure such extraordinary speakers to be ruined by a bad filter or poor wiring. It s not an option.
This is the 3230 s filter. These are high end filters. This is the 3210 s filter you really get your money s worth and the 3230 you get your money s worth with the 3230 you can t tell me that the filter is the same in both speakers. You can t be contentious look at how gorgeous this is it s incredible look at this port philippe is going to show us something unforgettable.
We re going to set up the product. We re seeing this live can you believe it i m so happy to be able to show you this we re getting everything in place. We re going to send test signals to the speaker. Philippe is going to place the microphone at the right distance.
It s a measurement microphone connected to software on a pc and we re going to send the signal. I can tell you that the speaker is taking a hit and so am i we re testing. We re testing. The torture is over and the test is finished and if everything is ok.
The speaker is approved the curve is correct. Hello. Tom hello. How are you i m good nice to meet you so hold on to your seats.
It s not often that you get to see this tom is going to assemble a turntable here you have the base here. He s going to assemble the turntable. What are you going to start with tom. I m going to start with the platter bearing because that will allow me to rotate the turntable as i go along and install the different elements.
I m going to show you exactly how it s done i m getting the platter bearing ready for every assembly. The pressure of the drill is calibrated the pressure exerted here. This allows the screws to be inserted correctly without damaging the base next. We re going to install the motor.
There the motor is mounted in its space. We re going to add the pulley as i explained earlier we can slide the platter directly onto the platter bearing this gives me easy access to mount different elements and rotate. The turntable as i go along it s great to have a maximum of positions for the assembly. Without it being difficult to orientate the turntable as i want and on average how long does it take for you to assemble a turntable have you tried to it depends.
I haven t been doing this for very long so for a turntable it takes around thirty minutes. Including the test. Including the test half an hour including the test. So what it means is that we assemble all of the parts.
Once all of the parts are put together the circuit boards and the tonearm adjustments go through quality control . So that the product has optimal settings. Before leaving assembly. And going through overall quality control.
Ok one turntable at a time each unit. So there it is once everything is assembled. We re going to add the tonearm so here is the tonearm now the tonearm has been added the tonearm and its cartridge. Which is already mounted tonearm and cartridge.
The entire unit has been added did you mount the cartridge on the tonearm yourself. Actually everything was pre assembled everything was already assembled when it got here that s it well not really we assembled the entirety of the tonearm. Which means all the parts are shipped here. And we put everything together to have a functioning tonearm ok.
We assemble all of the tonearm s parts together. So then you only have to add the tonearm so then we can add it directly to the chassis. There you go so now we re going to add the switch that lets you select 33 or 45 rpm. You know i m watching you do it tom when i just see it like this you make it look easy.
It s not easy. But it looks like a jigsaw puzzle. Everything is ready to be added. It s kind of crazy there you.
Go. We re going to add the small rod . Which will be used to hold the adapter..
This is when strength is required when you have to knock on wood. Then upside down again. Now we re going to place the parts right then we re going to add the casing which has already been assembled so we added the electronic components beforehand in order to save time during the assembly process here you have the riaa card. The amplifier and here is the power card.
Which lets you activate the turntable. So you have to slide the wires. There it is perfect so as for the card. I mean the card is connected now we re going to solder the litz wire to the riaa card.
We re going to wait until you re done now we re in the final stages as you re about to install the famous belt. These are the final stages. So now i m inserting the pulley which is going to hold the belt. There are times when we all struggle to install the belt because it is kind of a chore.
It is yes. It s a special moment in the life of people who like belt drive turntables. This is the way to do it sometimes. I can t do it myself.
So here is a finished turntable and later. We ll witness the testing phase. That s right welcome to our testing room. I m going to show you how we control the quality of the turntables once they ve been assembled first we re going to check if everything is good with the cartridge.
We can see that it s not moving around. Which is a very good thing it means that the cartridge is properly mounted then we re going to place this disk on the platter. Here you see every other line looks stationary. So this way.
We know if the platter is rotating at 33 or 45 rpm. The strobe system used by the famous technics turntables. That s exactly it sl1200. This test is all good so we can move on to the test with the elipson record can you explain this record to us.
It was made by elipson that s right these are your recordings and this record is sold by elipson. Absolutely this record can be purchased right absolutely this record can be purchased people can buy it so that they can do their own tests. What we re doing here you can do it at home. But thomas won t be with you that s right so you won t know what to do with it we re going to start the test this record.
Allows us to check the response curves and make sure everything is right so as you can see on the monitor. It s showing that everything works well on the right side now the left side then both sides at the same time. The curve is good the record is going to send an impulsion to verify if both curves match. It s all good we switch to 45 and all the curves are good we re going to listen to some daft punk to finish this test.
So now we re moving to the test phase. We re not going to show this in the video. Because otherwise youtube is going to give us a billion dollar fine. Thomas you ve been wonderful.
The pleasure is all mine. Sincerely. It was great you ve never seen anything like this right you ve never seen anything like this before me. Neither there you go ready for shipping.
This is the end of this video. I had a wonderful time filming this episode of le grand d. Ballage behind the scenes of elipson. I would like to thank.
All. The people who have welcomed us here today because we were definitely nosey. We came here we filmed. We talked we chatted.
We had a laugh so i would like to address a big thanks to everyone here as for. Us we ll see each other. Again. Very.
