So that you can see my videos every single week. Im not ready for this video today. Im going to be talking about the body shop.
I can practically hear the size of relief from the hundreds of people that have been requesting me to review the body shop for the last year. I just want to say it sorry for the delay guys i know it took me a long time. But im here im queer and im ready to slay the body shop is a really popular brand.
Which is why ive spent so much time looking over the company looking over the products. The ingredient list the formulations how the company has behaved what theyre going to do and i have a lot of thoughts. I always have a lot of thoughts.
But especially for this brand both the good and the bad so im first going to talk about the brand their vision their focus and then im going to talk about their ingredients and their formulations and then at the end. Im going to talk about the things that i love and the things that i hate when it comes to the body shop. So lets get into it so to give you guys a little bit of a backstory.
The body shop is a cosmetics company that was founded in 1976 in the uk and they currently have over. 1000 products in 3000. Privately owned stores thats crazy i had no idea how massive this company was but theyre most known for their more naturally focused products that have like a really nice fragrance and a really nice feel to them.
But also for the fact that theyre also cruelty free. I would definitely categorize the body shop to have a similar marketing style to lush cosmetics. I mean both are uk founded companies and theyre just kind of very similar in the way that they operate.
But i will say i always thought lush was like 10 times bigger than body shop. Obviously not body shop is killing isis now like i said before the brand prides itself on being cruelty free vegetarian half of their products are vegan and fair trade. All of which i appreciate so freakin much.
I always respect companies that fall under that line of ethics and heres the thing not gonna lie. When you guys are requesting the body shop so much i never really gave it a lot of attention. I just didnt have much experience with them.
And i really didnt think much of it until. I was talking to a good friend. His name is keenan.
He actually has a youtube channel. So feel free to go to the description box to check him out if you want to but he previously worked for the body shop and he was telling me about the company a little bit. Because i told him oh.
Hey. Im actually planning on making a video about the body shop. And when he was talking about it i had no idea that this company was a very different type of cosmetic company let me explain i always thought of body shop as a store.
But its really just nice creams that smell really good that you slather all over yourself. I really didnt think there was any focus towards effective skincare. Formulations.
And if you guys arent familiar with my channel hi. I am very unethical when it comes to skincare like im super super picky about what i like and what i dont like and i just never really took the company seriously. But then my friend keenan started describing that this was a very socially oriented company.
Which made my ears perk up because im a whore for a good social cause. And he recommended that i do a little bit of research. When i went onto the website.
I was not prepared for what i found the body shop is one of the most social issue. Focused companies that i have ever come across in my life. And its definitely.
The most socially focused skincare company that ive ever seen so. Let me explain to you guys a little bit. The company says that they are aiming to be the worlds most ethical and sustainable global business.
Not just cosmetic business business in general in their mission. They have 14 different targets that they are aiming to achieve and i want to touch on a few of them so first off the body shop is very focused on fair trade ingredients and fair trade sourcing. What does this mean well the majority of the products that you have in your house that you use every single day.
Some point in their production process slave labour was used to create them whether it be children adults mothers at some level. The majority of products around the world have used slave labor. Its one of the most unfortunate and awful things about the world that we live in and something i am determined to change in the future.
But with the majority of companies when theyre sourcing ingredients for a cosmetic company the most that they know about that ingredient is where its sourced from they dont know about the communities. They dont know if the people are being treated. Fairly if theyre being paid fair wages.
They dont know anything and because skin care products have so many different types of ingredients. Its really difficult for a company to go to every single place that they source. The ingredients from and make sure that everything is a okay.
But heres the thing on the body shops website. You can go and look through all of their primary ingredients that they use and when you click on them they talk about each ingredient where theyre sourced from the community thats employed through them which companies or organizations. Theyve partnered with to make sure that there is no slave labor and exactly how they extract it now this is unheard of because most companies dont want consumers to know all of those details because not only does it give them a possible risk of competition.
It also could open up a can of worms if they are using forced labor in those areas. So the fact that the body shop is so transparent about all of this is just something so so so hard to find in the industry. Also they have an entire portion of their website dedicated to teaching people about modern slavery and the way that it shows up around the world.
Which is just. Oh. My gosh wow.
Incredible we need more people to learn about this i know if you guys watch my video about lush cosmetics. I talked about doing a video focused on slave labor in the cosmetics industry and not to worry. It is coming soon.
Im working on it. But im so glad that the body shop focuses on this another one of their topics is environmental sustainability. That is something that i hold very close to my heart because hello.
The world is dying. Im not here to argue that we need to help the earth. I did not realize that with every single purchase of the body shop one square mile of rainforests is restored in vietnam.
Which not only leads to less carbon in the atmosphere. But also creates a home for so many species that are on the brink of extinction and in total theyre aiming to restore 145 million square acres to the area and thereby provide homes to hundreds of animal species oh by the way ive linked all of my sources below if you want to see the sustainability reports or where they talk about what organizations. They partner with ive linked it all below and in addition.
Theyre taking a lot of huge steps to reduce their carbon footprint. Again. Incredible.
What companies are out there that are doing this extensive work to help the earth and has to help people im jumping the gun anyway and the last part. Im not going to talk about that im also really impressed with is their enriched not exploits mission. When it comes to most businesses out there the way that they source their ingredients.
The communities that they partner with the people that they employ somewhere along the line. Theres a lot of exploitation happening. And the body shop has an entire target dedicating to not only making sure their ingredients are fairtrade.
But that theyre also employing underpaid communities around the world they source their ingredients sustainably. So it doesnt throw off the natural environments of those areas reducing their carbon footprint and moving towards sustainable packaging. As much as possible like i said before the websites are down below if you want to do more research.
But this is fucking incredible holy shit. What did the companies do you find that are doing this. But there was also a moral conflict because let me talk about the products.
The ingredients and the ingredient formulations now i want to touch on some of their most popular. The first one being the ever popular tea tree skincare line. They have an entire line dedicated to tea tree and the benefits that it claims to have now.
If you dont know my opinion on tea tree. I have a little bit of an iffy opinion. I think it can be great for the skin.
When at low concentrations and formulated in a very specific way. But usually companies will use way too much tea tree in their formulations. Which makes me very nervous.
But i want to talk about two of their products from line. The first being the tea tree facial wash. I was happy to see that tea tree is listed underneath the 1 line which means youre not going to overdo.
It with your skin. This cleanser does include sodium laureth sulfate. Which tend to be a little bit too stripping for my skin.
But its also not the worst ingredient out there so if you have oily skin. You may like that product moving to the tea tree oil from a formulation perspective. The second ingredient is denatured alcohol an ingredient.
I am very vocal about how i dont like. But i also recognize that this product is meant only for very specific spots on the face and most of the time when youre struggling with acne or breakouts youre experiencing a lot of excess oiliness in that area so using a product with alcohol on that spot isnt the worst thing ever because its not only going to deliver the good ingredients into the spot. But its also going to help dry it out and make sure youre not too oily this oil is pretty harsh.
But honestly the ingredient list is better than i expected because i thought at first it was 100 tea tree oil and i was like bitch that is what were not gonna do okay not today. Because theres a painful flashback to a time where i thought that t2 isle was good for the skin and so my dumb ass went out and bought an entire bottle of 100 pure tea tree oil and did an entire vials worth across my face. That experience was so scarring literally within 5 minutes.
My skin was burning like crazy and for the week. Afterwards my skin was so freaking sensitive and im pretty sure my skin is still recovering from that trauma. But anyways.
I also love that this is formulated with tama o oil. Which is great for brightening any dark spots that you experience after having acne. But its formulated with limonene ctrl and citronelle which are all fragrance ingredients that i absolutely hate and this leads me to my primary problem with the body shop they tend to use so much fragrance in their products.
If you are familiar with my stance on fragrance. Im personally not a fan of it whatsoever. Fragrance can be really irritating to the skin.
And can cause a lot of long term damage. If youre not careful about how much use in addition fragrance. Doesnt really provide a lot of benefits for your skin.
It is really only in a skincare product to make it smell nice and because fragrance has so many side effects that can make it really irritating and damaging to a lot of peoples skin. Im like why do we have it in skincare. If its not necessary it shouldnt be in there.
But even if a company says they are free of synthetic fragrance. That doesnt mean. Its good for your skin.
Both natural and synthetic fragrance are highly irritating to the skin and really unnecessary in a formula and whenever i see a product thats formulated with a lot of fragrance. It definitely casts a lot of doubt in my mind to the brand overall because im like do you really know about what ingredients are good for the skin and which arent if you want to see my full thoughts on fragrance and skincare go to link in the description box below. I made a whole video dedicated to that why should i be trusting you with my skin.
You know and this is what i find with so many other products for example theyre super popular vitamin e moisture cream when i looked at the ingredients not only does it have parfum which could mean a ton of different fragrant ingredients and components of which we dont know what any of them are because they are legally allowed to disclose. It as a parfum instead of listing out each of the fragrant ingredients the moisture cream is also formulated with hydroxy citronelle limonene geraniol lionel oil citronelle and cin ma alcohol all of which are very irritating fragrant ingredients and usually when i see one of those in the skincare product. Im like boy bye.
But when i see all of these it makes me back into a corner and shield myself from any possibility of this touching my face because there is no need there is no need to have these ingredients in a product. And this is a big reason why i was so turned off to the brand overall. But i decided to go to ala moana shopping mall.
A mall in honolulu near where i live and i went to the body shop stored there and i asked the associate if they had any fragrance free options and to my shock. He said that they did there a low soothing line is completely fragrance free and so you know what i did yep. I bought some i had to those fragrance free and ive been able to try these products over the last month.
And get my thoughts on them i purchased the a low soothing day cream. The soothing rescue cream mask and the a low calming toner now each of these products are different in the benefits that they deliver. But overall.
The ingredient lists are relatively the same and they target. The same concern now the entire alo line is formulated for sensitive skin. And its formulated without fragrance dyes or drying alcohols.
Which i absolutely love because i try to avoid those ingredients. Where i can and looking at each of these ingredient lists. I was like you know what theyre good theyre not amazing theyre not the most revolutionary skincare products out there.
But theyre good in this moisturizer for example. I really like that they use sesame seed oil. Which is an amazing hydrating oil.
But also good for antioxidant protection. They also have siloxanez which are beneficial silicones that help to make sure your skin doesnt lose any water throughout the day. And its properly hydrated and other ingredients that i really like and after using each of these products.
I didnt notice anything dramatic. But i noticed that my skin. Liked them they did what they were supposed to do and that was it and this is where my opinion on the body shop is drastically different from lush cosmetics.
If you didnt watch my video the truth about lush cosmetics. I talked about how i love the brand from a social issue standpoint. But from a formulation standpoint.
I just cannot use any of their products. I dont support the amount of fragrance that they use and just overall. I think their products are formulated really really poorly mostly because i just cant find a single product that they have that is formulated without fragrance or essential oils.
But the fact that the body shop has options available to people with sensitive skin. And has an entire line formulated without fragrance is where i will say that i definitely support and im a huge fan of the body shop and even though a lot of their products are formulated with fragrance. The fact that they have fragrance free options to me shows that they are really trying to be as as inclusive as possible and make sure that everyone can use their skin care products.
So i would say for my final thoughts. If you are looking for good basic skin care that doesnt have any fragrance or irritants. I highly recommend using their a low line because they deliver the basic skincare benefits that you want to see in a moisturizer.
A toner a mask and not just because of the formulation. But also because every single purchase that you make with the company is going to be doing so much social good around the world we need to support a company like this because with so many different brands operating unsustainably and unethically our dollar. Truly matters and the survival of a company will completely depend on where we are putting our money and for those reasons.
I will continue purchasing these products and recommend others to do the same they checked off everything my piggy ass. Needed operates ethically fragrance free options affordable price point. Im in who ive been talking for so long it just had so many thoughts to share about this brand.
Why are your opinions comment below. I really want to hear your thoughts are you more interested in supporting the body shop because of their product formulations or more so far their social issues. Are you going to be purchasing them in the future.
