We met up with Obsidian Entertainment’s Leonard Boyarsky to learn all about The Outer Worlds – one of the most compelling games of E3 2019.

What’s up everyone daniel kayser here at e3 2019 2019 and i am joined by leonard from obsidian to learn all about the outer one of the most talked about games of e3 2019 congratulations on that and tell us all about the game u003e u003eleonard. It’s a sci fi fantasy kind of game where you can play any kind of space hero or villain that you can imagine.
It’s all about dark humor and exploring narrative and choices that you can make in this world u003e u003edaniel. What are you showing specifically here at e3 u003e u003eleonard.
We’re showing a chunk of the game that takes place on monarch. It’s a planet that didn’t terraform correctly. So there’s a lot of giant monsters on it and a lot of the corporations who run the colony have abandoned it so it’s become a lawless frontier and you’re doing a job for organized crime u003e u003edaniel with a company like obsidian your track record and history.
What is it that’s exciting and refreshing to you all as developers about bringing this project to life u003e u003eleonard for me. It’s creating another world from scratch and being able to explore what that means artistically and thematically in the past.
I’ve done a lot of isometric games. And i haven’t done a lot of first person stuff so being able to really get into the details and the kind of things i wanted to show has been fantastic u003e u003edaniel did you know right away. What the look and the feel and the tone of the game was going to be or did it take you a while to land there u003e u003eleonard the tone.
We knew very early on because it’s just a combination of mine and tim’s personality. He’s the other game director.
That works with me we started working way back on the original fallout and we developed a lot of the themes as we went. I think the discovered part was working with our art director. Daniel alpert.
Really exploring the ideas of what it would mean to visualize this world where the robber barons never went away from the early 20th century incorporating some art nouveau stuff like very big chunky machines stuff that doesn’t feel very slick not really high tech. We like to refer to it as a low tech pulp science fiction physics u003e u003edaniel talk a bit about the unique gameplay mechanics the things that stand out to you that will make this unique u003e u003eleonard.
Really it’s all about the choices you can make as a player and the fact that we allow you to take your character in any direction. You can conceive of and the game reacts to that we give you very different paths you can take the combination of like what choices. Am.
I going to make from a plot standpoint. And what choices am i going to make from a character building standpoint.
What choices am i going to make from a moral standpoint. All of those things combine to give you a very rich experience that has a lot of replayability and a lot of hopefully. Difficult choices for you to make along the way to figure out how you want to play this game.
And what you want your character to be u003e u003edaniel of course. The game is running in unreal engine talk a bit about why.
It was a good fit for you and the studio u003e u003eleonard. It’s been this really powerful tool for us to use and to really bring this thing to life it looks fantastic. I’ve been playing it recently on 4k.
The detail we can get is just really mind. Blowing u003e u003edaniel.
What has the reaction been like here from the people who have had the opportunity to experience the demo u003e u003eleonard. Great people seem to really enjoy what they’re seeing a lot of people are coming in here. And we’re getting a lot of really good reaction.
