Even training x. We just missed a glorious sunset. We are about two and a a half hours away three and a half hours away from having to leave kailua for 2018.
We got the sunset just like weve been doing the last few times. Ive traveled instead of making you follow us around from airport to airport over the course of this past week at ironman hawaii. Were asking all the pros what motivates them so thats what you get today and youll see the sunset at the end light playful music.
Ive been through a really hard year this year. And hen. You have the dream of winning this race in kona.
One time this is like the biggest motivation. It was for me the biggest motivation to keep pushing and im optimizing everything. But when youre winning for the first time the goal is gone you have to find you new goals and the whole eight hour stuff.
Its been a dream obviously but i wasnt so sure if im a allowed to dream it because its so much more going into breaking. Id always hear yeah. It was kind of not i was not trying to think of it was just wasnt driving me.
And yeah just to be among the greatest and thats probably what drives me the most and im also too to show some special people that it was not the one day shot. And that was also emotional motivation going into that that was good so its so many things that motivates me its sometimes really little things im just like you go to a session. And your teammates are there and youll see them then like the feeling of after a hard session when you can just relax and you feel tired.
Its something i really love and yeah like often its like even things that dont even matter in the long term is just heat. I dont know its sunny out there you go for a run. Im just you have to different motivation to get yourself motivated every single day because it is like repeating.
And its not that exciting to train hard then many people will think. Its kind of like a yeah like a very happy like just a happy thing and of course. Then the big goal.
You have to have a big goal like something youd like to achieve for thats for me obviously. Its the racing. I know like i would like to be in the best possible shape.
Im in corner and and i also know the condition is getting tougher and tougher and young ones coming up and pushing it and thats definitely also very motivating. And it really keeps me driven. And i had the holy lawrence coming two years.
Ago pushing the three most windows 73. And being really strong and then with lucy childs and its really great to see these young athletes and so such strong women and that definitely is also a big motivation for me.
Most of my motivation was all self driven triatholon was just evolving. There wasnt a big clubs that we have now and i went through a lot of periods. Where motivation was very difficult and i was kind of an all or nothing kind of guy.
Which is not a healthy element. And it took me a long time to recognize and sort of my rule that i tell amateurs. I said first off dont procrastinate if you have 20 minutes do something for 20 minutes.
Most of the time its kind of a teaser and you get about 18 minutes to say gee. I wish i had 25 minutes. I wish i had 30 you finished the 20 and you get a little of that morpheme endorphin like lift and you say okay i feel better and now youre able to tackle the day and the next day and training psychologically and emotionally you need to have that positive notion that allow you to perform at your best as far as getting involved in the sport.
It was really about at the time of my life. I was 25 and it was just about a challenge wanting something new wanting in a challenge wanting to go on and something to accomplish and first year went. Really well and got addicted to it and saw the potential and just kept driving to see if i as far as could be at the top and so that was always my goal was to try to get to the top of the list and the goal was always from day one before i did my very first triathlon was all about the ironman world championships here in kona.
So that was always the goal from day one fell short of one time and as it got close a couple times. But still love this place we live here now for about nine years and this is home. So its exciting to have everyone here for this great week look forward to it well to be honest the first year race here in 2015.
Idnf and it seemed like a good decision at the time. But i just regretted it from as soon as i stopped its just a its one of those things. Its difficult from that point on just explaining to people why you quit for no good reason.
So i always had to sorta sounds cheesy. But just stay true to myself. And just finished every single word thats kind of what i think about what motivates me is i think about my son my family all the sacrifices they take when im away training or racing and thats what motivates me especially when it gets tough out there on the course.
I think of him one thing. That keeps me really motivated or you reflect back to my accent. Which was a 2017 during iron man world championships during the bike course i was in a severe accident.
Almost lost my life it was millimeters away from losing my life since i lost so much blood in and i just think back to that moment and how thankful. I am. And how every day is a privilege and the lord has given me the gift of life and during those dark moments.
I just think back to how thankful. I am. And how grateful i am.
And thats what really gets me through those tough times. I think i mean ive even as a little kid.
Ive always wanted to win even if it was lack of board game or some silly game. Ive wanted to win so the i think i just have that drive to want to win. But then there is that trying to see what is your actual physical limit.
And i dont believe that im anywhere near that yet so race is already coming up with ways that i can be fast out. Shes great so theres lots of work to be done. But yeah i think again its kind of you come second.
But the positive from it as well weve still got more work. Were still not where we need to be and we can go home and come up with new ways to get faster. So im phrasing cons of coming second.
I think so much of this sport is really just seeing what youre capable of seeing when things get hard how you react. And thats universal whether youre a 16 hour marathon are you 16 hour ironman person or 8 hour. I mean.
Its really just when its hard what do you do and yesterday. It was so hard and im obviously im proud to walk away with a good result. But it was more just the never give up attitude than i was able to carry through that no that means almost as much to me if not more than finishing fourth.
My first kona iron man world champs. So i have a daughter and husband at home and they are big supporters and motivators for me. And so whenever things get really tough by i think a lot about all the investments and sacrifices that my husband and daughter have put into this for me.
And my daughter and i paint her fingernails pink and so when im down on the bike. I see my beautiful theme fingernails and that we have matching together and that really helps motivate me on my left hand. I write belief and on my right hand.
I write column inner drive to conquer and then on my palm before. I even was a champion. I wrote.
I am a champion. So i youre a champion. Whenever you view across that finish line and matter.
If its first or 10th or 20th or last. Yeah things always get tough even when youre having a good day. Theres going to be dark moments and thats really when you have to go back and remember why youre there i had some t shirts printed up for this leading into this race at the back it says something to the extent the remembering your why thats always my big big thing is if you dont know why youre there why youre suffering.
While youre going through this pain. When that gets to that point you dont know how to push through it you just dont you crumble and so if you know why youre there that helps you focus on something during the dark times and that can at least bridge.
The gap. Until the body starts feeling a little better you get a tail or a headwind on the run headwinds are much better than tailwinds here. So thats always focusing on the why narrator.
Whats your why i believe that god gave me a gift and its my responsibility to use it to the best of my abilities. So thats my why and thats what fuels. The training and on race day.
I think the fascinating thing about triathlon is a snap you can never be perfect at it so i think for me. The motivation always is to perform at my best. And theres always something to improve on and i think for training its a yeah.
Its crowded. I just find that enjoyable. The challenge of the of that whole proposition of trying to in it and then i so we put ourselves in such challenging conditions in our training.
Whether thats whether or attitude or or whatnot. And such that when it is a race and the conditions get tough typically not as bad as what wed probably done in training so in terms of pulling myself out of those moments. I think its important just to focus on the process.
When you hit those harder. Routes and the race and focus on what you can control yeah. So theres always a way out its usually just to choose your attitude about the situation.
Ive been at this for a little while now. This is my im wrapping up the 16th year of my professional for into the sport and just like anything in life when its super repetitive it can get hard to stay motivated. But the way.
I was raised and now ive got my kids are getting older. I can really set up the perfect example for them in terms of what perseverance. What hard work what determination yet put them in on it into that blend or on a daily mix.
And what it can deliver and i tell my kids if you want anything in life. You gotta work hard for it and some days are better than others. But yeah i think its my kids and my family and its really the people that its my the people that go to my heart.
I want to honor them with my commitment whether that is to trap on or if it would be any other endeavor in my life. I think for me its the amazing surprises or feelings that i already had in the past like if you do all the suffering in and all the being soft in a really long day on your own. But then in the end to get a super nice who bark if you win the race.
So you getting on the podium or and i think thats where the what makes you come back every year to the big races to try to achieve the same and i think its just the yeah. The motivation is always there to try to get the best out of yourself on the race day and the bookkeeper thats what keeps you motivated.
I think the motivation of iron man. We have all the age group that is a challenge because i remember because of the distance. Quite a challenge for everyone.
But i mean i locked it you as well because i really liked loved the speed and the fight against the competitors. And yeah. The big field that everyone is really close together and you fighting it out so.
I missed that part of it because everyone is pretty much stick on the race plan. But its yeah. Its something different and i wanted a new challenge.
I wanted to step up from itu. I really loved it i still do love it. But i think i had my years in itu and now i want to have a fresh start try something new and i think ironman is something completely new and you have to be patient you have to focus on attrition.
Theres so many different parts of spotter really enjoy. And yeah. I have a lot to learn.
And yeah. I love it to be a rookie again then stop like a fresh thought and see what im capable of for you i think its me i think i still have i have a need to prove myself. Yeah.
I just feel like and especially coming from last year. Like i was obviously very happy. But then i was like well i need to go back next year.
And do better and mainly for me. But also just to like show people that no it wasnt i think especially in june athletes be always have something meant no not mentally well. But just some an edge and yet for me.
Its very much so yeah proven what i can do i love the suffering. I love the process of pushing body to limits and just seen. What im capable of and for me.
Thats the exciting part is that they still dont feel like ive reached my potential in this sport and for me. Its very much exploring whats possible in the air. I did hawaii.
But thats sort of my obsession right now just see what my body is capable background conversation. But may have an extra we can try and win it pays better i think i i would have been a lot closer to ani. Ive no idea whether or not it could have been the same result.
But my guess is i probably would have been able to put my suit on cheers cool when next week. Okay ill try .
