Youtube. Im going to show you how to trace coax cable using just a a multimeter and a piece of aluminum foil in this case. Ive already been this i have six coax cables rg6 that ive run up to a computer room years ago.
And the other end of these six wires is three. And theres three go down into the basement into a wiring closet problem is several years has passed and i dont remember. Which one is which tand theyre not labeled.
They were labeled and originally but the labels came off as you can see so theres no way to tell. Which line is which down in the basement.
You can buy coax mappers and tracers for 20 30 bucks. Some are higher and they will map it out for you or if you have a multimeter and a little piece of aluminum foil you can do it for a little of nothing so let me show you how were going to do that all we do we take as you can see the inside disc rg6 cable. There is a stinger on the inside that little copper conductor and then this outside cable is the outer sheath so what were going to do we are going to put a little ball of aluminum foil and youre going to put it inside there see if i can do this with one hand.
So that it touches both the stinger and the outside chief. Like that what that will do is thats going to create a short that we can test with a multimeter using either the ohm feature or the continuity. So now that i have this one shorted.
Lets go down to the basement. And see if we can find this wire and then we can label it okay we are here in the wiring closet.
Which im in the process of relabeling all of these wires and im holding here three wires this end does have labels. But the other end doesnt so im going to remark. It and identify the one we shorted out above upstairs.
And the way were going to do that were going to use our trusty multimeter and were going to turn the setting you can use ohms if you want which is that settings. There and you basically look for a shorted circuit. Using ohms or you can use the continuity feature.
Which is that mark there i like it because it makes an audible noise. Which makes it easier to hear and you dont have to look at the meter.
So basically what were going to do were going to take the two test leads and were going to touch the outer sheath with the inner stinger on these wires. Until we get a short circuit. So let me put the camera down for a minute and ill move the wires to the camera.
So here we go were going to put one test lead on the outer shell. Just hold it there and the other test lead is going to touch the stinger now we dont hear any sound. So we know thats not the wire.
So we go on to the next line heres the next wire pull one on the outer shell kind of hard to do you can holding three wires and again. We dont hear any sound there so we know that that is not the correct wire.
Well. We know this is the last wire. So it must be it.
But lets test it to be sure hold one lead on the outer shell. It doesnt matter. Which side and then the other one the tech blue tube touches a stinger right there and as you can hear there is the continuity that tells us that this line that im holding is the one that we shorted out above.
Which is about a hundred feet away. And we can now mark this wire and properly identify it hope this helps you and saves you from having to buy expensive tester. All you have to have is a multimeter and you can do it thanks for watching.
