We also know this is a neutral element. It doesnt have the after it so this is neutral nickel. So the protons will equal electrons.
We have 28 electrons to write the electron configuration here for nickel. We use this periodic table. We have the orbitals theyre broken up into this different blocks.
Thats very helpful you can also use this chart. Theres a link in the description. How to do that i prefer this method will start with 1s so put our 1s here s.

But we dont need 10. We only need 8 to get a total of 28 electrons so well just go 3 d. 8 and thats the electron configuration for nickel neutral nickel as found on the periodic table youll often see the electron configuration written this way.
But since were getting further into the periodic table here. Its probably better to write it like this where we have the 3 d. Before the 4s this more accurately represents how the orbitals fill and then when we have ionization when we form ions.
We lose this 4s first so well write it like this either ways probably ok they both describe the same orbitals. Though lets write this in a condensed notation. So nickel is 3 d.
