“Wvu west virginia university department of geography world regents class. This is an official shoutout shoutout from me the planet avenger to you the awesome peeps in world regions whoa mountaineers. This is a particular shout out upon the request of the most awesomely prime professor maria. Perez.

Your teacher of this awesome world regional geography class. So shout out hey. There. What s up hope you had a great semester.

Hope you enjoyed reading and hopefully learning from the blood avengers world night edition that hopefully you ve now gone all the way through learn tons of stuff and thrown away. Actually hope you gave it away to somebody else so the learning can continue in another generation. Your great professor perez asked me to give you a shout out just to say hey what s up and to maybe cite some things that you learned in this book in this semester. And update.

Some things about what s going on in the world when it comes to populism and maybe where this is going in the future by the way. I wrote this book about a year and a half ago. Maybe even two years ago. When this term populism was just in its formative heyday on the world stage as more and more populist leaders were rising to power wrote.

It when one donald trump. Was running for president of the united states. He has since of course won the presidency of the united states. But he s not the only populist leader out there what is populism you already knew learn this in the book.

It s a leader or someone a democracy or otherwise. Who speaks on behalf of the ordinary. The common people to come and clave. The working class the blue collar on ordinary ideas.

Strong willed usually men who are going to force their opinion on the world on how to fix things and donald trump is just one example on planet earth. But there is also the leader of china xi jinping not a democracy but a populist because he is supported by a vast majority of the population who thinks he s going to fix everything and make things right. He has concentrated his power further and further in the course of the last couple few years. So that he s going to be the political leader of china for the rest of his life.

You also have prime minister reach up dajuan of turkey or missy. The president. I don t know he s been both he s likely in power for the rest of his life. Another populist leader.

Who s been absorbing more and more power in what was a democracy now turning into a one party state. You also have the leader of the philippines and the leader of many other countries one could even say the prime minister modi of india is a very popular leader. Who s leading a charge of the majority of the people to implement his policies in the way he sees fit to fix the world now. What has this meant for the world.

We still have this rise of populism globally. Although it s starting to taper off now a few years later. But it s really impacting the world because of president. Donald trump s opinions on how the world should be run particularly when it comes to reinforcing the primacy of this thing.

We call the state or the nation state. Other terms you learned in this course. I ll bet and that is he has led the charge and he has had other populist leaders follow him worldwide to move away from an internationalist system that is a system that states work together for those supranational astorga nih s ations that you also learned about in this class. Things like the european union or nato or the united nations.

There s lots of them and there s been a move away from all of those entities. Since the rise of these populist figures around the world now why is that well it appears that these populist figures want to solve many of the world s problems or their country s problems by concentrating on their own people in their own state in other words. It s not that everybody s saying we don t care about the rest of the world or we don t want to participate in any other super nationalist organizations. Although donald trump.

This has let his entire presidency saying. I don t like nato..

I don t care about the un. I don t care about this so he s led the charge but it s not that these populist leaders are giving up on the international system it s more than they re saying we want to refocus power and primacy back on our own state at the expense of working together with others in other states in these super nationalist organizations. So what the biggest impact of populism worldwide right this second is a weakening of inter inter national institutions. Particularly.

The united nations that really is but was already semi toothless when it comes to enforcing laws globally and has become more so as the united states has retracted away from it and that s led other entities to retract away from full participation in the united nations. But you re also seeing this manifest itself in the dissolution of the european union. I shouldn t say that those are too strong words. Let s just say.

The united kingdom s decision to rip itself away from a super nationals organization called the european union. It also is playing itself. Out with. Donald trump.

Saying. We don t support nato. As much maybe. We think.

Nato is outdated that military institute international organization. That s truly powerful and awesome has started to fragment a bit as well and if you start to look at other trading bloc s around the world. Most of them are starting to kind of not wane and power. But there was a real drive towards that for the last 50 to 60 let s leave and say.

A hundred years and that s starting to slow down and again even starting to go backwards just a bit for some of these particular institutions side pointing to that s not to suggest that every populist leader around the planet doesn t want to participate in international organizations. The president of china president of russia oh vladimir putin another great example of a populist leader. These are folks that are populist. But they still want to maintain that global order of the past because they re playing a significantly powerful role in it as other leaders like donald trump move away from center stage in international organizations.

Oh. That makes sense i i hope so because that actually is this current theme that i m talking about is playing into the next. Addition of this very textbook. The 10th edition of the plight of interest world is going to focus on what i m going to call the walled world and maybe professor perez can say a few things about this when i close this down the wall of world is all about the increasingly fractured planet where certain groups of countries want to work together and build walls or barriers to exclude other groups populations.

Countries and or regions. And the easy way to think about this in this walled world is it does appear that the rich world. The rich developed world is starting to close ranks and not want to let people from other poorer regions come into their regions. Oh.

I know you know what i m talking about now. Maybe. This whole building. A wall on the us mexican border.

Perhaps maybe the wall between north and south korea. Perhaps maybe the mediterranean sea is a water barrier. That s being increasingly patrol to keep immigrants out from middle east and north africa from coming into the european union that s the next big trend that this populism trend is feeding into is how world regions are going to increasingly isolate themselves some physically with barriers in the coming years or perhaps decades interesting concept yep that s going to be the topic of the 10th edition of the platt avengers world. But once again thanks for reading this book.

Hope you learned a bunch of stuff in world regions and have a great end of semester. And a great summer and a particularly awesome and educated life you have to know geography you got to know where you re at to u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 u0000 know for us. It s you know waves and winter and cold and snow ya. Know we don t get half the snow that interior gets oh no that s all that s fine with me.

I mean i like a white christmas. But maybe we both have adhd and we re getting way off topic. If you could live anywhere in alaska where would it be um. I could i got so many places.

I d like to live. Really yeah really yeah..

Um. I mean as long as you know like i said. I mean i would like to stay in the southeast cuz. I really that s not what he said.

He said you have to pick another place besides the southeast really oh dang gosh. I don t even know then to be honest with you what about what about down on the kenai peninsula. Besides the meth. What didn t you like there.

I m just kidding. It s not that bad and now stop talking about that i m just being silly um from i mean i didn t like it because there wasn t enough. I wasn t surrounded by mountains so in key now you got the cook inlet and then there s mountains on the other side of cook inlet and then you kind of have little mountains. But it s not like the southeast.

Where you re like surrounded by mountains. I mean you d have to cross the water to get to the next biggest mountain and then it s kind of like rolling hills. There. So why would you move then it s the same man.

Okay you gotta pick a place baby. I gotta go. But i got all kinds of places that i like i don t know i don t want to go anywhere. Where it s cold laughter.

I m so good with like 30 degrees in the wintertime. I want to hit negative. So yeah like we got we were just talking to her dad. And he said it got to 20 degrees this morning and but we just went for a walk in in our hoodies and it was like 31.

When we left so 31 degrees. And this is november 31 degrees or november s yeah that s fine dude. That s perfect weather. But like they re already in the single digits in fairbanks.

I mean it would be nice to go live word. Didn t rain so much i guess the thing you d be hauling water. All the time. Yeah true alright.

So like i said. It s seven degrees in fairbanks right now and we re like in the in the 30s. We re 34 degrees. So if you think southeast you re like oh whoa.

34. Cold. Not know you go to fairbanks. It ai.

N t cold dude. They re kids. Her brothers kids they moved from fairbanks to like the big negative. 20 to negative 50 degree weather to kenai where it was like negative 10 maybe wearing like shorts and shirts t shirts you know you think about moving away from here is what i don t like is the whole driving thing i hate to get in a car drunk that s why i mean i love living where i live is because like driving for us is getting into a boat and doing it that s arm.

You see whales and porpoises and sea lions and all kind that s cool that s cool. But i know like sometimes i wish we had a road that leak cuz do you know is landlocked so to get in and out of juneau its boat or plane that s it but sometimes like i wish i could just like get your motor running because where you grew up and where i grew up i ain t getting in the cars. I m having to drive more than like 15 minutes. If she s sleeping 50 minutes.

She s sleeping yeah so she sleeps here when we go downtown like we re in her mom and dad s house. We re going downtown ten minutes down the road she sleep..

If we were on a trip she d be sleeping. I have fallen asleep. When i ve been driving all right so i ll go how about that okay. There are all kinds of places.

That you d like to go. Yeah yeah up north really um. I mean i m gonna look like an idiot cuz. I can t think of the word now not metsu max ooh.

The max go max ooh valley. Yeah that s like a name. But yes. That s so matanuska the mats cool that s what they call let s go where do you think that s let s just what the that s what the natives call it i m never mat su right there mat su valley matanuska okay okay so where we were i could definitely do that that would be nice that little area like another some youtubers and simple live in alaska.

They their youtube channel. They live in willow and then block goes north those guys live in wasilla. Yeah. And then rustic by nature.

I think they live in palmer and we both like time yeah school. I think palmer was too close. But i d still want to be now if i m little nervous nice hummer in the kenai was nice. But so i don t want to live somewhere in the mat su valley.

I think but if i you can t live there anymore. But if i if i could i would go to that place to the top of the world. The arctic. Where they you can t drill.

And only people that have cabins cabins are now once they die. There s no more cows being built in there it s like the arctic refuge or water dude. It s like crazy way up. Laura really yeah now to me to me that s bush.

What boy like that s another term like people say bush all the time bush yeah yeah. But then i mean. There s tons of places. That i d like to live.

It would be totally different lifestyles you wouldn t need a boat. But i would that would be hard living just because in the winter for sure yeah. But yeah. But the thing is is even here hareem alaska s kind of a unforgiving place so if you get in trouble in alaska.

I mean literally. It really could be a life or death situation. Yeah so if you like in the wintertime up to the interior. If your car breaks down.

And you re just not preparedness negative 50. And you re like in the middle of nowhere. And you don t find help there s a possibility i mean the elements. It s definitely what gets people in alaska for sure brasi definitely would be the water yeah for us.

It s the water because in the wintertime. The winds pick up the water gets nasty. And you just you never know you never know ones you know and winds come through like you re like oh. It s just fine.

We can cross through and then all of a sudden a big wind storm comes through and you re like and it s amazing how fast they yeah. It s fun to watch it on the water because you can actually see the water gone like starting to tremble and then all of a sudden you know you can hear shake it in the cabin definitely..

But um. So we could both do mat su. We could do mat su. How about me nice.

I think that was all of his question. He didn t say who did he sy. I mean let me look real quick through so. He said.

Pick the top three oh good god well yeah. That works hold on what did i say. If you re moving to alaska. And you never had lived there before knowing what you know now where would you pick and you can t pick where you live currently that s why it s an important in your answer.

And then you said you could give a top three. So my top three would be mat su valley. Oh my homer homer is cool. But i don t you know we ve never been there.

But around the seward area seward looks really pretty and it s awful. See like there. It s like it s a sea town. Oh.

Yeah. Sick is southeast. Oh. Okay.

He didn t say southeast did he no he just said here. But i m ruling out the southeast because but the southeast is beautiful it rains a lot. But if you can deal with the rain do you get it all you get no you get everything it s water yeah so i would say the mat su valley. I liked we found a couple cool little cabins in i think this anchor point.

We were looking at getting the cabin. Which is in the kenai peninsula. Too so yeah. There s there s places out there all over the place and then oh what was the place that was really pretty.

But i was too expensive copper s landing on cooper s landing. I think it s cooper s landing. It s in between kenai and and anchorage driving up. But that was that was really pretty place too.

We want to thank brad for the awesome question. Because really we really enjoy his comments. Yeah. He s pretty funny funny guy.

But that s a great question and we get a lot of questions about alaska. But so do we answer it homer open it basically k9 peninsula mat su valley and then if you could still build like up into top the above the arctic circle. It s i think it s called the arctic refuge. I m not sure.

But they did a little documentary about like the last few families that live there ” ..
