“Welcome to right to top comm. I m adam today s video is a quick quick tip for those of you who will be taking the ielts or toefl and need to think about your essay and a lot of people get nervous about that first sentence that they re writing for their essay. Okay. A lot of you have been taught you need like something called a hook sentence.
A hook statement. Now what is a hook statement. A hook. Statement is a sentence that grabs the reader s attention and makes him or her want to continue reading it has to be shocking or it has to be really interesting or maybe.
It has to be a tease okay. But it s something that s captivating and makes the reader want to continue reading now in most cases. If you re writing an academic paper in university or you re writing a book or you re writing anything if you re writing a personal statement applying to university. The hook is very very important but for those of you taking an english examination ielts toefl cae.
Any of these tests. The hook is not important do not spend time on it okay. Why first of all you don t have the time. Okay.
A hook. Statement has to be very creative. It has to take some thought it has to be very engaging you don t have time on these tests to worry about something like that ielts you have 40 minutes to read the question plan it write it edit. It i sorry toefl you have 30 minutes.
So you don t have time to worry about this one opening sentence second of all you already have the graters attention. You re not trying to grab the reader s attention. This is their job. The graders are going to read your essay from beginning to end you have their attention just talk just write.
And say what you have to say and again for the graders and for you as well the thesis and the body are the most important parts of your essay. The hook is not going to make any difference in your essay. Don t worry about it having said that what should you do and what you do not do when it comes to this first send well the opening sentences do s and dont s. I have here do just introduce the topic.
The general topic of the essay. What are we talking about not the specific not a specific question out your specific opinion. Generally what is this essay about what is the general topic and be simple and be straightforward. What does that mean the three c s clear concise correct.
Okay. That s all you want to do you want to make sure that the reader understands very clearly very easily in a short as short as possible of a sentence..
What the essay is about and it has to be correct according to the task. Okay. What should you not do so again. I already mentioned don t spend time thinking about this sentence.
Don t overthink. It just let it out very simple sentence. Here s what i m going to be writing about okay. Don t use cliches or memorized sentences.
Now i know a lot of you you read books on how to do well on the ielts or toefl especially the writing section. And you or you go to websites and you say and you learn about these things and a lot of these books. And websites say. Oh.
Here s a very good statement. Just use this to start your essay. Things like topic. A has been a sorry that big situation has been a topic of great debate.
Or so. And so has been a matter of great controversy or it has been a question that has plagued people since the dawn of mankind or humanity. First of all you re not the only one reading these books and visiting these websites lots of people are doing it lots of people are using these sentences in their opening in their introduction paragraph. So.
What is a cliche first of all a cliche means an overused. Statement or expression or word. Sometimes okay keep in mind. If everybody s reading these books and websites and everybody is using these sentences.
The graders understand that you just took this out of somewhere okay now especially this is especially true when a lot of these expressions. Don t actually fit the situation. Okay so for example. You have a question is it better to study abroad or to study at home international or domestic studies.
It s not a matter of great debate. It s a matter of choice. Okay you can debate if you want them. Which are the better schools are there better schools overseas or at home.
But a university is a university. If you get a degree at home or you get a degree overseas you still have a university degree..
You still have to work hard you still have to put effort so if you go overseas. It s because a you could afford it you had the money to do it you got accepted into that school and you wanted to go to that school. So it s not a matter of great debate. It s a matter of personal choice.
So using that expression already tells the greater you know what this person has memorized this particular sentence and are using it in or is using it in this introduction avoid cliches that being said don t overwrite to keep your sentence. Simple and just very clearly say in general what is this sentence. What is this essay about don t give details the details will come in the body paragraph. The whole introduction except for the actual question itself is very general and don t try to answer the question in your first sentence.
You re going to answer the question in the body. You can have your thesis statement. You re going to have your body paragraphs to develop that opinion to present your argument okay so we re going to look at a few examples of how to start a an essay or introduction paragraph. Here s a question.
The invention of the printing press in the 15th century changed the world by allowing more and more people to afford and access books and information today. However books are becoming the latest victim of technologies move toward digital storage and accessibility. In fact some people believe that the world will soon stop printing books and everything will be read off a screen. Do you agree that printed books will eventually disappear.
Why why not now you can get into all the details here like how long it s been around technology. This that the other but generally speaking. What is this question about what your specific question about what is this essay going to be about and the general topic is books that s what you re going to focus on your first sentence has to bring in the idea to the readers mind of books. So let s look at a few examples books have been an essential source of information for centuries.
That s it very simple sentence. All i m doing is i m introducing the idea of books. And i ve been around for a long time ok make sentence. Now with the advent of technology.
Some people believe and now i m giving you the specific question that you re going to answer. Here s another example now in the second example. What i ve done is i ve taken your introduction. You re a general topic.
Sentence. And i ve taken the specific question and combined them some people like to write a two sentence introduction. You take your general and you take your specific you put them into one. And then your next sentence is going to be your thesis your opinion and reasoning.
While books have been a central source of information for centuries some people believe that modern technology will soon make printed materials obsolete. We re talking about books we re talking about the possibility of technology making them obsolete obsolete means no longer useful okay not necessary..
I disagree with this opinion. Because dot dot dot for centuries books. Have been humanity s greatest source of information. Again same idea.
I just rearranged. It my main subject of my sentence is books. Because that is the general topic of this essay. I m going to continue on the same question with two more technological advances have made many things obsolete and printed books.
Maybe. Next. Now is this a good introductory sentence. Not so much it s not bad.
But it s not good because i ve made my subject my main subject technological advances. So the reader might think that this essay is about technology. Which it is partially. But the focus and the question is do you agree the printed books will disappear.
So the focus is ebooks. So your focus of your trajectory. Statement. Should be books.
Here s another example. Despite being humanity s greatest source of information for centuries books. Now face the risk of becoming obsolete. Personally.
I disagree with those who believe books will disappear. Because will disappear. Because reason. One and two there s a full introduction.
I ll leave the reasons to you to answer and because that s what you re going to develop in your essay. Let s look at another example a large retailer wants to open a new mega store in your neighborhood. Do you support or oppose this opening so what is the general topic we re talking about a retailer. We re talking about a store so we re talking about shopping right in many countries shopping has become a favorite pastime.
What s the focus here shopping pastime means like hobby things to do in your free time. However..
I disagree as such i agree very simple one more an old proverb states that you are you are what you eat today this would suggest that as a result of our diet. We are full of chemicals hormones and artificial substances. That are injected into food to make them bigger. Prettier and longer lasting.
Some people believe that this is making us unhealthy and should be stopped. Others believe that food. Today is part of the reason. We have an increased life expectancy.
This is a two part essay. Which opinion do you agree with so food is good food is bad. What are some ways. A person can maintain a healthy diet.
So general topic of your essay food and health. Nowadays. The abundance and high quality of foods. Available to us has led many people to question the healthfulness of these products while some people believe the additives in foods are causing us harm.
I believe that obviously they are good and talking about health. We re talking about food and healthfulness that s it and i m also putting in the actual question in there so there you go keep your opening sentence. Simple don t overthink it don t spend too much time on it you don t need a hook. You just need to get in there get the introduction very quickly done and focus on your body paragraphs or so i hope this was a little bit helpful.
