Today, bluevelvetrestaurant.com would like to introduce to you What Can Battlefield Learn From Overwatch? // Overwatch + Battlefield 1 Discussion. Following along are instructions in the video below:
” s been about two months since i said goodbye to battlefield and hello to overwatch overwatch as i switched up my primary shooters and i have to say that i don t regret that decision during this time. I ve come across a few things that i feel if were implemented into battlefield. One it had become a better game for it some are not necessarily mechanics or systems. Some are more to do with how the developers go about maintaining their game.
But we ll get into all of that in due course. The first thing i want to talk about is communication. Both games are team based shooters albeit on a different scale. But they both have a fundamental need for cooperation and teamwork.
Without this a team cannot succeed and win matches. Battlefield has been slated by the more hardcore players because of its appeal to the more casual audience. Which is in part bound to the game s design and also down to its marketing. But that s a story for another time one way where battlefield falls down.
When it comes to team play is because of the lack of voip communication between teammates. There is actually a voip system in place in battlefield. Where squad mates can communicate with members of their squad. But it s not exactly advertised.
Well through the menu system settings can be adjusted from the options menu. But there s no real way to tell that there s a voip system in place if you re new to the game overwatch handles communication. Very seriously because of the lower player count game modes where individual players actions carry more weight. If even one player isn t communicating it can mean bad.
Things for the team as a whole. There s an entire submenu that can be accessed by pressing p on the keyboard..
That allows players to switch between voice blobbies and mutes and own needs or message teammates at the start of every round. A message in the chat tells you how many members of your team are in the team voice chat and gives you simple instructions how to join the chat yourself in fact in the latest january update for overwatch. There s actually a great being button on the right of the hero select screen that when pressed puts you straight into the team chat. You can really sense that the game is pushing you to communicate with your team.
Because it knows. It that it s such a quintessential part of the game. Battlefield has a similar style of menu with the squadron teams like screen. There with a few additions or double up perfectly as the voice chat lobby menu actively pushing players to connect a microphone and join voice lobbies would no doubt increase the level of team player that could be achieved in rann quickplay matches.
It does have to be mentioned that overwatch is very much tailored towards the competitive community and whilst. It does contain the casual quick play mode. That works very well for those that just want to kick back and enjoy the game. Casually the bulk of the community are there to play it competitively.
Which is why team playing communication is pushed as hard as it is battlefield. Doesn t have these separate modes that split the casuals out from the competitive players. It simply lumps them all together and forces them to play as one which i think is where a lot of friction comes. When you see highly competitive players slating.
The game for its appeal to a more casual audience. Again the argument for having a competitive mode for battlefield is a tale for another time. But i think adding just a bit more emphasis on voice communication within squads would do battlefield the world of good another form of communication that overwatch handles in a much better way than battlefield. Does is the communication between devs and players the guys at blizzard are incredibly involved with their community.
Not only do they have their own official discord server staffed by members of their team there to provide support and discuss potential issues with the game in chat rooms. But they re constantly active on the subreddit replying to posts with valid reasons..
As to why changes should shouldn t or can t be made not a month goes by without. Jeff kaplan taking to youtube to provide an insight as to how platoon make their changes to overwatch going through their thought processes and reasonings. Which not only helps players to understand why the changes are being made. But also allows them to better understand how to adapt their play style to these changes.
So they don t feel out of their depth when a surprise update hits. If they really want to get familiar with upcoming changes. Then the ptr is there to allow players to test out their changes in a non consequential environment battlefield used to have an equivalent to this with the cte for battlefield 4. And hardline.
But as of yet. There is no sign of one coming for battlefield. One with dice. We don t usually get as much communication back and forth between the community and dev sure you might see the odd reddit post or tweet.
But that doesn t equate to a near 15 minute long video explaining everything that the team is directly working on the result is that we get hit with a surprise patch a wall of patch notes. Some of which makes sense and others nerf or buff over or under powered weapons into oblivion. These changes might reflect the general outcry from loud members of the community. But they don t necessarily always make the most sense communication between community and is a vital part of creating a fairly balanced team shooter and blizzard.
Seems to have it nailed down right now so i think that if dice were to take a leaf out of blizzards book. It benefit the game to no end both games. Feature. What s nicknamed.
The calm rose short for communication rose due to its function and appearance these types of control method are generally used on console focused ports of games where there aren t enough buttons on the controller to individually select weapons like we can on pc usually with the number keys in this sense the wheel is intended for players who don t necessarily have a microphone that they can use to communicate or for players who want to quickly indicate something to the entire team like an ultimate charge level. The thing with battlefields..
Offering bow is that whilst it used to be snappy in previous entry to the franchise. The updated version in battlefield. Warren utilizes separate sub menus to categorize different social and order remarks. Which means that selecting a message to send is actually slower since there have to be two mouse movements before the player can let go of the comoros button.
The primary function of the controls is to provide a quick and easy way to communicate. Which is why in games like overwatch and even legal legends you can quickly hold the button. And ping your mouse in a certain direction to send a guaranteed message. The player has to stop what they re doing and think about how to navigate the comrades before they can send a message.
Which counters. What the feature is all about going back to the way the battlefield. 4. And battlefield.
3. Handled the comoros or even allowing for it to be customized like overwatch allows for its sprays and voice line wheel would make gameplay and communication much more fluid. During daily gameplay the final thing. I want to talk about is polish overwatch has to be one of the most polished games that i ve seen released in the last few years right up there with the witcher 3 in terms of overall quality with bugs and server issues being at an absolute minimum whilst battlefield.
1. Was infinitely better than battlefield. 4. When it first launched it s not perfect and the rest ll nuances that bug.
Me is times like when you get stuck on a piece of terrain that should evidently be possible to traverse or when you get revived and stuck aiming down the sights or when the ui bugs out meaning that you can t select a server or when the game fails to connect to a server. Because they re unstable these issues..
Are what a lot of players are faced with during their playtime with battlefield 1. Whereas with overwatch. I can honestly say that there has never been a time when i ve been caught on terrain. Never be the time where the ui is bugged out and there has only been once when the server.
I joined crashed which then forced me to leave my competitive game and sacrifice a few of my skill rating points considering the overwatch was released five months ahead of battlefield and i ve experienced fewer bugs during my playtime. That s a pretty stark. Comparison of course at battlefield maps are on a much larger scale. There s more to think about when it comes to terrain more for the service to handle.
But surely that s something that should be taken into consideration during the development of the title. What are an extra few weeks. Added to the development schedule of the game for more vigorous qa testing to iron out this sort of thing obviously. I m no game developer.
And there are probably a lot more factors that affects this sort of thing. But the constant annoyance of bugs in battlefield and lack thereof in overwatch was a large factor that affected my transition between the two games. Overwatch is my preferred game out of the two so call me biased when i say that there are some things that battlefield could learn from it i d like to hear your thoughts. Though what do you think battlefield could learn from other similar titles to improve itself or on the contrary.
Do you feel like other titles can learn a thing or two from battlefield. I d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below if you enjoyed this video. Don t forget to leave a like and subscribe for more videos like this you ve been watching major and i shall catch you in my next one ” ..
