“I have a vizio p. 42. Hdtv. 10 a plasma tv up on my workbench workbench to take a look at let s take a look and see what the is first okay as you can see we re looking at a very dark picture on this set.
And gonna see if i can get any the menus to show up. I ve got the remote control. Here and the remote is sending out a signal. So i m gonna try and bring up some menus.
I can t even bring up any menus on this thing. So a very very dark panel. We can see just a little bit of picture up here to give you an idea. What s playing on it right now.
It s content that s it s actually not the brightest content in the world. But as you can see we re dealing with a very very dim picture this type of a symptom is pointing towards the common panel. Driver or common sustain board. Sometimes referred to as a zed sustained an lg and ss board on say a panasonic somewhere on that common sustain.
We have a failure. We re not getting a proper voltage. So let s get the back off this thing and take a look and see what s going on inside this set okay first things first. We re going to check the fuses to make sure.
There s no fuses blown on either the zed sustain this is an lg television. It s a vizio. But it s made by lg and it says so right here lg electronics. That s a 3351 r3 sorry.
It s a part number three three one five q h. 0. 4. 0.
It s a high definition panel. This would be not a full hd 1920. 5. By 10.
But it s going to be probably..
A 720 panel that they ve got but a lot of the earlier 720 panels weren t full 1280 by 720 they were they were typically 1024 by 1024 so it s kind of a in between panel. Anyway. That s irrelevant. We ve got no picture on here more than likely.
Our problem is this hybrid module does bad on the zed sustain board. This card oh we re just checking our fuses continuity. There s two of them on each board. So we ve got continuity.
There we ve got continuity on that fuse and we ll go over to the y sustain board. Again. We ve got continuity on both fuses on both boards for all four fuses therefore. We know that we don t have a dead shark on board.
The next thing. We re going to do is we re going to check for the correct voltages from the power supply because obviously if the power supply is not putting out the right voltage. It s going to affect our picture. So let s check our voltages now so here s our voltages.
That the panel. Expects. It s a model. Pdp.

X. X. X. Because.
I was told under various different brands. Very different manufactures. If you guys saw the patna plasma panel that i blew up with a couple of microwave transformers on it a while back that was the same panel as this i had a set that the board s had already salvaged out of it i had no further need for any of the parts on the set. So i took care of it and then recycle.
The same panel as this so rv able to just get any 60 volts or vs..
Is 186 so let s check our voltages on the power supply to make sure that our our power supply is putting out the correct voltage before we go any further of course. We can check for our power supply voltages right here it tells us what they re supposed to be our tell us plot on the sticker. Tell us. Which pin is which there s our va and our vs voltages.
So it s just a matter of checking our voltages using our voltmeter. Our ground probe is going to go to the chassis. This is on the cold side of the power supply so we can take any point along the metal chassis and check our voltage is there so we ll check first we ll check our va voltage. Our va voltage is supposed to be 60 volts.
So here s our va voltage. Here we see on the meter. It s showing that i have 60 volts. So we know that that looks correct our vs voltage.
That is supposed to be 186 volts and here s our vs and iv guess voltage is also correct at 186 volts therefore we have to start looking at is the failure on the y sustain or the zed sustain how does the plasma television work the y sustain generates your vertical scan discharge voltage the zed sustain commonly called the common mode driver generates the main charge on the panel this one affects the panel brightness so our problem is most like they re going to be on this board over here. Now one thing you can do to determine if the panel is actually working or not or whether the board is working as user ears. You can hear the sustain board working you stick your ear up to the to the y sustain board. You can hear it.
Buzzing at above 60 hertz. That s the refresh rate. Now go over to these that sustain board. Take a listen i hear something.
But it s not very loud. So don t work over here. As it should be i can hear very very faint buzz on this board. On this one here.
I m hearing a lot. But a lot louder buzz. So we know that the ic is working on this board. But on this one here it doesn t seem like it s working properly first thing.
I ll do is i ll take the board out first of all just see if there s any bat solder connections on here that could be causing a problem before or idea condemn. The board. So first we ll just connect the power lead and then we ll disconnect the signal cable. That s coming over from the main signal board.
Then we need to disconnect these flexible pc cables..
These are the common drivers alona so this is just the strip of solid foil. There s two of them one at the top and one at the bottom. Again. This is a common conductor.
All the current for the panel goes through these two connectors that s why it s a solid conductor. This is just like a common strip. It s not a common file. But it entered it entered leaves between the addressable grid.
Which is also on the front of the panel and as i ve explained for and how a plasma panel operates you ve got two grids on the front of the screen like this separated by a dielectric. One of them is going to your buffer boards. Which are being driven individually one line at a time to scan from top to bottom the other one is your common mode. And that s going over to the the zetas state or the common mode driver and that s the one that carries all the current for the discharge the y sustain and y buffer set up the charge line by line.
The discharge is then controlled through the address electrodes. Which are on the backside of the panel and they actually create the discharge. But the discharge current is controlled through the same sustain board. So what you have a brightness problem.
It s gonna be something to do with your zed sustain or your common mode driver. It s called different things on different brands of tv s i call it a zed sustain on an lg. Because that s what they call. It.
It s also known as the x main board on samsung. Or the ss board on panasonic. Now it just so happens i have another said sustain board here from a tv. That i scrapped the one that you saw go up didn t claims where it had the wisest they actually had two of these lg sets in the last year or so and they had the same module that failed on them one of them had the zed sustain that had failed.
And it had a good y sustain actually had both and both modules were shot. But the other one came in and it had just the y sustain module had failed this that s the same was good so this is the good zed sustain and we re gonna put this one in this television over here and we ll see if it fixes our problem. I ve got the new board mounted just a couple more screws to put in here. We can connect it up and then we ll see whether we get a picture back on this set.
But i m betting that this is going to fix the problem with it so we ll just do it. The connectors here okay and then we can plug the power back in and we ll go around and see if the tv s working. So turn turn on the power to set here and see if we get a picture. There we go so that s all the problem.
With this set..
Was was the zed sustain board common mode dryer and failed when you see that type of symptom or really dark screen. Maybe just a little bit from the edge of the picture like that like this one have just had a little bit of a picture on the right side of the screen. That s typically where your problem is going to be on these lg televisions. The real common problem is these big high privacy s rather than change this i see that s on here these things are real pan.
They ask to change because you got to get them so hot to get the i see a lot of times you can easily damage. The board. They re screwed on from below. So you can t take the heat sink off so.
While you re heating. These things up just to remove the i see the i put so much heat on the board. It s just our really piss poor design on lg s behalf. I m certified that they don t use these anymore.
But that s a repair of an lg. Made this is a vizio with a common mode. Sustain board. The zed sustain is lg.
Call. It and we re back in business. As you can see i don t know if you can notice it on the screen here or not but this follow. It s like he s been watching a lot of 4×3 content is there is some bird markers.
Almost going to show up on the camera or not. But there s some burn marks here. I m watching for my food content. Anyway.
