” re going to go over how to replace the display assembly on an iphone 5c 5c before we begin first thing will i do is make sure that everything on phone is functioning. So i ve gone has gone to general settings in battery percentage and turn that on so i could see my battery percentage. And i have it plugged in and charging. I want to make sure that it climbs at least 1.
While i preach everything the first thing. I m going to do is make sure it s got service. We re going to make sure that we have wi fi. We want to check the front and rear camera and while you test the rear camera.
You want to record a video as well so that tests the rear microphone then flip it over to the front camera and again record. A video so that test is the front microphone and then we ll bring up siri or voice control make sure our proximity sensor is working by covering the top of the phone. And this screen should go black and come back and to test the bottom microphone. Which is located at the bottom left of the phone.
We ll record a simple voice memo test. One two three four five and go ahead and save that then we ll play it back make sure all you meup volume down mute and then play it back. But this time. We re going to press.
The ear speaker here and make sure that recording instead of coming through the loudspeaker comes through the ear speaker. Once all this tests are satisfactory. We ll go ahead and power off the phone and my battery just charged one percent. So i know my charging circuit is working.
I can go ahead and unplug this and power down. The device. Now the iphone is powered down the first step. We re going to do is take our pencil a screwdriver and remove the two screws located left and right of the charging port.
I m gonna set these off on the side try to keep your screws as organized as possible so that they go in the same location. They came out and once those screws are removed you see this glass is pretty badly broken. So we re not going to get a whole lot on the suction cup here. See it s not stick and due to all the cracks.
So you can put a piece of couple of pieces of vinyl tape or packing tape over here in this case. I m going to use a vinyl sticker. Which will cover the front of the phone and give me suction on the cup. So the first thing going to do is i m going to slightly lift.
And you ll see the display sembly you ll start coming out. Now directly above the headphone jack is a little port to lick the screen. So i can go in there and gently lift my screen up and then pull back just like that now that we have the phone opened. We need to disconnect the battery from the logic board by locating plate across the dock.
Connector flex and the battery. It s held in with two screws go out and remove these two phillips screws and again you want to keep your screws organized and typically when i pull out the plate. I ll set the screw next to it so i know that they came out in the correct location. Now that plates off right here is the battery connector so what i need to do is disconnect it from the logic.
Board. Now you don t want to dig inside here. There s numerous components around the logic board. I ll go back here get my nylon spudger underneath and lift upward to disconnect now that the battery is disconnected.
I m not worried about any other damage due to electricity being on the logic board now that the battery separate from the logic board..
We re going to go ahead and remove the emi shield here. Which holds all the cables for the display assembly to the logic board. Now you want to hold the display assembly up with one hand while you work with the other you don t want to let the display fall back as you can rip and tear. These cables and the front facing camera cable.
Which is located over here will be transferred to the new display assembly that was purchased so the retaining plate emi shield here is held in with four phillips head screws. Now the screw in the upper left corner is made of a different alloy and it s non magnetic. So i ll typically take this one out first and see sometimes it will pick it up. But most often it won t depends on how fresh the magnetic charges on your screwdriver.
But a lot of times. You ll have to use a pair of tweezers to pick it up out of place. It s also the longest of all four screws located here so next. I m going to take the upper left screw out and then the bottom two screws in the event that you find a screw that is stripped or won t come out.
We also carry a material called screw grab. Which i ll you put a droplet on the ship your screwdriver. And it s got very small beads that allow you to regrab the the threading and able to remove this group. So once the four screws are out we can go ahead and lift and remove this retaining plate and set it aside okay next.
We want to go ahead and disconnect. The cables. Attaching display assembly to the logic board. The first one this is going to be the front facing camera cable.
Which also has the upper microphone ear. Speaker contacts ambient light. Sensor and proximity sensor. Now you could use a fingernail to lift that up or use an esd safe nylon spudger.
Which came with your kit and when you do this you want to make sure that you re only getting underneath. The metal connector not digging on to the logic board so if you knock anything off the logic. Board you can render the phone irreparable. I m going to get in here disconnect.
The first cable next would be the lcd cable and lastly back here is the digitizer cable once those three cables are off you can separate the display assembly from the phone slide the frame aside as we re going to transfer numerous components from the original display assembly over to your new display assembly. So now that i have the new display assembly. As you ll notice here we re going to have to move the home button flexi cable and bracket the thermal plate and the front facing camera cable assembly ear speaker and brackets over to the new assembly. So let s go ahead and set.
The new screen aside and start removing everything needed here. The first thing. We re going to do is go ahead and remove the ear speaker bracket. So you have two screws the upper left screw.
Which is a very long screw and the bottom right screw of the ear speaker bracket. Now the bracket itself is clipped in over here on the display. So you need to gently unclip. This using the spudger and then lift all the way up to a 45 degree angle and remove as it is also held on the other side right there on the bezel once the retaining plate is removed.
We can go ahead and lift the ear speaker. Out now the front facing camera bracket cable front facing camera. Proximity sensor and ear speaker contacts here now this flex cable has a little bit of adhesive around the tool alignment pins. So what i ll do is i ll take a pair of tweezers or you can take your nylon spudger and get just underneath there just enough to gently break that adhesive up.
But don t use any kind of force otherwise you ll easily rip the cable..
Once this adhesive set free you can go ahead and roll the cable back you see in here. This is your proximity sensor bracket. This your ambient light sensor filter. This your upper microphone.
So let s go ahead and lift the microphone out of the rubber grommet in the screen just like that okay next we re going to remove the home button bracket and flex cable and the home button so we re going to remove the two screws located and left and right of the bracket now you ll notice the home button flex cable is attached to this bracket here with adhesive on the underside and then there s a little bit of adhesive underneath. Where the contacts for the home button itself is now the easiest way to get those that freeze using the isis mo to come in here and gently slide underneath and lift. Then the whole piece comes up is an assembly set that aside now the home button itself. We re going to take the flat end of the nylon spudger and come underneath and press upward and lift the home button with gasket out of the old assembly next.
We re going to remove the thermal plate. Which is held in by a screw at the top a screw at the bottom and two screws on the left and right side. So come in here and remove those screws start with the left side here turn it around to the opposite side. I remove the screw right down here at the bottom of the thermal plate and lastly remove the screw at the very top.
Which is actually facing upward. Then go ahead and lift my thermal plate up. Which you notice still has the copper tape and the front facing camera cable attached to it that s all we need off this for the moment. We still are going to have to transfer the ambient light sensor filter over when we get to there now we ll take our new screen.
We ll go ahead and remove the esd protector from the backside of the lcd. Like so we ll install the thermal plate back in line. It up and then install the screws so i ll start with the bottom screw now. I m just put it in enough.
So that the threads grab and then i ll take the top screw and insert it as well now start putting the crews on the right and left side this i m not tightening the screws all the way using the screws to allow me to align the thermal plate correctly. So i m just getting the thread started once i get all six screws in place then i ll go ahead and tighten all six. If you notice. I m not putting any pressure squishing the thermal plate down.
I m letting it naturally rest on the backside of the lcd. Once my last screw is in then i ll go ahead and tighten. It i m not over tightening. It cause.
I don t want to strip these out now the third plate is back on going to go ahead and place. The home button into the new display assembly line it up turn it over make sure that the square on the home button is level with the screen then i ll place the home button bracket with flex cable in place making sure that the flex cable lines up on the two alignment pins over here on the side. And then insert the two screws. This crews are really tiny as best you put them on the tip of your screwdriver and then drop them into place.
Just like that then go ahead and press. The flex cable down. So that it lines up under the pins and if you notice that the pins aren t lining up. We ll go ahead and loosen.
The bracket again just a little bit move it over so that it lines up on the pins. Correctly you can see they re now aligned. Now. I m going to take the original display.
And i need to pull the ambient light filter and move it over to the other one so. What i m going to use is the flat head screwdriver. Including your kit and i m going to insert it on this bottom edge and then gently give it a little twist and you ll see the filter will slide over then using my tweezers. I ll go ahead and pick that filter up just like that and then drop it in place on the new display assembly.
So sit in the same exact location..
So this next step. I m going to take the microphone and put it into the rubber boot here you ll see the hole for it located right there and just by simply running it up and pressing it in it ll drop right into place. Just like that and then make sure that it s fully in by pressing with your finger. Then i m going to take the cable with the front facing camera and i m going to roll it down into place before they do that i want to make sure that everything is still attached if you look at the underside.
You ll see the ambient light sensor right there. And there s a rubber boot. Sometimes this will stay in the original display and if that does happen then you would pull it out and attach it right on this cable right here just like so it s usually held in pretty good with a little bit of adhesive this your proximity sensor right here. Which you want to drop inside the proximity sensor bracket.
And then this portion of the ambient light will drop into here and the front facing camera will go into the front facing camera centering ring. So all they should smoothly drop into place so i start with the proximity. Ambient and then the front facing camera and the cable should drop right over the ear speaker alignment pins. Just like so if any of the cable.
Feels like it s not dropped into place pull it out and recheck. It make sure nothing fell in there. So everything was good here. So the next step is i m going to take the ear speaker and i want to make sure that the bottom portion of the ear speaker here this oval is going to drop into the rubber boot right here next to the microphone.
I m going to take that and press. It in place which case the ear speaker will also drop over the two alignment pins right there and everything should feel nice and flush you should barely see the pins coming through the holes. The tricky part is getting the ear speaker bracket back in you can t see this too well on a camera. But it slides in over here and goes in at a 90 degree angle goes into a bracket and then you should be able to press it down and everything should stay in place.
Just like that let s go ahead and reinsert. The two screws making. Sure that the longer of the two screws goes into the upper hole. Then we ll insert the bottom screw.
Okay now that we have all the parts transferred over we re ready to install one of the first thing we want to do is pre fold. These cables and the reason why we pre fold them is that the cables are pretty stiff and when you connect them till your logic board if you pull on them you could damage the screen. So i m going to do is go ahead and press. This area here at the top of the copper tape and then i m going to take all three cables and fold them backward just like such so that everything will sit nice and flush now.
We re ready to reconnect all the cables to the logic board. One of the key. Things here is you want to get your thumb up here underneath. All the cables and try to keep the cables press against the glass.
While you attach them at the same time. So you re going to start with the digitizer down. Here. And you should feel it snap.
And almost hear an audible click. When it s connected next. We re going to do. The lcd connector just like that and lastly.
We re going to do the front facing camera now this one is the hardest. One to do because it tends to want to go sideways. So i m using the nylon spudger to help me drop it to where it goes into place and then press. It in lastly.
I m going to slightly fold..
The screen forward using my finger make sure that all three connections are secure. Now that we have all the connections down and they re nice and tight. We re going to go ahead and put the emi shield bracket back into place just by lining it up over the four screw holes. First thing.
I like to do is put the two bottom screws in both these screws are the same size. So it doesn t matter. Which one they go in to you i put the second screw into the bottom and tighten them up then the shortest of all four screws goes in the upper left corner. If you notice.
My screen is still slightly tilted forward so that it doesn t come accidentally disconnected while you re connecting the through the bracket in place and lastly. We re going to do the non magnetic screw. I m going to take my tweezers and drop it down in place and then go ahead and tighten it up now that all four screws are in we re good. We ll go ahead and work at the lower end of the phone.
So we ll reconnect the battery by aligning. The cable and dropping it into place and take the bracket. The angled end will go toward the bottom of the phone and reinsert the two screws again. You don t want to over tighten.
These the posts that they screw into can be easily stripped out now that both screws are in place. We re ready to close up the phone. Okay to close the phone you re going to notice here at the very top you re going to see a couple of brackets here that actually slide underneath the frame. If you want to take the screen at about a 30 degree angle and insert it until the corner of the display is aligned with the corners and flush at the top of the phone and go ahead and press display down at the bottom.
And it will pop in and then run your fingers down the sides to lock. It all down in place lastly. We ll reinsert the pentalobe screws to hold the display into the frame right now the phones back together. We ll go ahead and peel off this outer layer power up the device.
The first thing you see is your apple logo go ahead and light. The food boot up and then we ll go ahead and test every function again to make sure that nothing got damaged during the repair. Now the phone is all back together. We want to go ahead and test everything again so we re going to notate our battery percentage.
Which is currently at 26 go ahead and plug it in we want the battery percentage to come up at least 1. We re going to grab an icon till. They get jiggly and then move the icon all over the screen testing every area of the phone. Make sure that it goes off page and then back to the original page should the icon drop at any time retest that area.
If the icon continues to drop that would indicate there may be a problem with the digitizer or they digitizer connection also if you have checkers all over the screen that would tell me that the digitizer connector is not seated. If you get lines going top the bottom that would indicate that the lcd flex cable is not properly connected either let s go ahead and test the home button double tap. It the screen should pop up. We ll go ahead and test.
The front and rear cameras again we grab this app making a voice recording. While we test the rear camera and front camera that way we can test the rear microphone on the rear facing camera. The front microphone on the front facing camera and then we ll record a voice memo to test the lower microphone playback that recording and if you see the speaker up here is white that means audio audio is being sent up to the ear speaker so at the same time you can put your hand over the top and the screen should dim to indicate that the proximity sensor is working normally or flip. It back to the loudspeaker hang one two three four and at the same time go ahead and make sure your volume up volume down and your mute is properly functioning check our battery percentage.
We re at 28. So we know the phone is charging correctly and you re satisfied. We re done you re done. ” .
