“Tony. I would like to interview you to see what the importance that math placing placing in your job. I m going to be recording your answers. Where do you hi brandon.
I work at the a cup company. In saratoga springs. New york. What is your job title.
I m an intern specifically i m a financial analyst intern. You briefly explain your job well i do a wide range of things to assist our account managers and handling their clients and handling their portfolios..
I do anything from making databases on the computer. Doing research to coming up with ideas for investments and asset allocation. So pretty much anything that my account manager needs assistance with i help them what skills and math are important to your job. Honestly.
It s a lot of the just mastery of the basic math that you learn it in in middle school in high school. Specifically you know using express pred sheets to come up with finding percentage returns and things like that so pretty much everything that i m doing i m using some form of matt can you please give examples of when you use these skills uh yeah just a couple weeks ago. We were trying to figure out how much one of our clients and net worths grew from the last quarter to the current quarter and we had to go back and use percentages to see how much his assets grew from three months ago. So it was all math computation on a scale and one of one to ten.
How important is math your job. Oh..
It s it s really important. I would say. It s probably about a nine point six seven five. I m almost every task that i do i m using some sort of basic math tools.
And i don t really there s i couldn t really do any of my job without using that so yeah. It s a like a nine point six seven five five four. What part of math in your job is the most difficult uh probably when we don t get a direct statement from a fund or something saying how much one of our clients assets is worth that you have to do all the computations manually and try to estimate how much it grew or shrink from one quarter to the next. And one calculation can take like 30 minutes.
So that s probably the most difficult part problem. Solving is a life skill when you use problem solving in your job uh well probably every single day..
I mean i like to think that there s not a lot that i can t do. But i mean you always run across things that you re not sure how to do or it doesn t go the way you think it it would so i find myself constantly asking people how they do this or how they think i should do it so just about every day. I m getting help and trying to figure out problems. What do you see as important in the study of mathematics.
Um well learning how to do all the basic tools is clearly important. But what i think is important is knowing when is the best application for all of them i think that s something that you don t really learn growing up is when you re supposed to use which which method of mathematics to figure something out so to me that s something i ve had to learn on my own and i think that s the most important why is the study of mathematics important in school uh well. I think that no matter what what like field you go into when when you grow up. But math is the only subject well besides reading in english math.
Is the only subject that you are going to use no matter. No matter..
What you do and use it pretty frequently. So i think i ve never met anyone especially in the business world. That hasn t had some basic grasp of mathematic concepts. And not know how to do maths.
Though. I think it s very important for anyone because you re going to need it alright. Thank you and i appreciate the time and energy you put into this interview. Thank you i appreciate the time and energy you put.
