retroarch gba This is a topic that many people are looking for. bluevelvetrestaurant.com is a channel providing useful information about learning, life, digital marketing and online courses …. it will help you have an overview and solid multi-faceted knowledge . Today, bluevelvetrestaurant.com would like to introduce to you LaunchBox Tutorials – Emulating Game Boy Advance w/ RetroArch. Following along are instructions in the video below:
“The success of the game boy and game boy color nintendo stepped it up a a notch with a system that that was comparable in power to their fame to nintendo. It was a 16 bit machine at heart on the go. It had many great jrpgs and so a lot of them at the time. Japan only exclusives make their way to the american and european markets.
It even had some snes and nes games ported to the system. Because of its close relationship with the older hardware gba was so popular that it even had a place in the first two ds revisions. My name is brad and today on own broken software studio tutorials. I ll show you how to get the game boy advance emulated in retroarch and show you how to get the overlays working with the game boy to achieve the same result as the super gameboy and how it will apply to game boy color and game boy advanced.
So firstly. Let s add some gameboy advanced games to launch box. So let s go to tools import rom files. We ll hit next add files well navigate to where we have our gba games listed in the top right of the search box in this dialogue.
We re gonna do quotations asterisk dot gba and quotations now somebody in the last video suggested that we can leave the quotation marks at the beginning and at the end off of it and it will still get the same results. However do it the way that these windows search function functions. If you add the quotations before and after it will search for things only with the dot gba. The asterisk in the front also means that the file name can contain anything else so it s kind of a wild card factor.
The gba is the important part the asterisk and the quotations. Only augment our search results. So that it makes sure that we only get files with the dot. Gb.
A file extension or any other extension that we use like dot q. For example. So well click a game ctrl. A to highlight them all we ll hit open wait for it to parse click next for this box click the arrow let s scroll down to the nintendo.
Gameboy advanced right there next if you ve been following the tutorial series you should have choose an emulator and retroarch should automatically fill in the box. If not click add the default emulator that we have set up in launch box currently is visual boy advanced em. However em gba is probably going to quickly replace this if we don t already end up replacing it with a retro mark because retroarch has the vba vb. Am.
A vba next and m. Gba cores in its program. So if you want vba m..
Go ahead and click the click here to download a visual boy advance emma link that ll take you to the website you download. It if not if you want to use em gba. Google em gba go to their website download that or if you have retroarch go to that website follow. The other tutorials and how to download retroarch and how to update retro work download.
It put it. In your folder type. In the name of the emulator that you want to use browse to the exe of that emulator under associated platforms make sure that it says nintendo gameboy advanced if you re using vba em em gba or retro work you can also use nintendo gameboy akin to last episode. And if you are using a retro art remember that the default command line parameters middle box here needs to say l.
Quotations. Cores. The name of the core and a quotation t. Is for custom configs.
Only if you put the d command. In there. Without a custom config. It will crash retro art upon launch.
So if you don t know what this is just don t put it in leave. It alone with just dash out for nintendo game boy advance like i said. The emmet gba core is my preferred core and my suggested core for everybody else. But of course you can use the vba m.
Vba and vba next cores. If you would like all you got to do is come in here double click and swap out the mgp. A underscore lip retro. For these hey.
Let s say vba next. Underscore. Libera tro dll and if this is your first time importing games. And make sure to check the default emulator box.
This is really only beneficial when you first import your games. So now now that we have the emulator set up we ll click next use the files in their current location. We ll leave the checkbox to use the launch box database..
We ll also check the box for wikipedia next next it ll parse the emu movies database as well we ll go ahead and check box 3d box full if you are doing the regular import process. You can leave box box 3d box full and box box checked. If you are editing. A single game.
And trying to download or update. Your metadata one game at a time or if you re just trying to update a very specific game that needs to be updated. If one of those four boxes are checked. Unfortunately it will give you an error in launch box you can only have one front image and with those boxes checked it will try to tell launch box that you have multiple front images so keep that in mind but during this initial import.
You can download all images we ll click next and then next it ll put all your names in the list and then we ll click finish and then of course because i already have all my games imported it only imported 0 games to know if you already have your library set so for example i have 556 gba games. But let s say down the line somebody creates a new english translation patch or there s a romhack that looks kind of interesting. And i add a couple of more games to my roms folder. You can go through the rom import process.
All over again add. The gba extension files through the add files box in the importer. Like i showed you and instead of importing all your games. All over again.
It will only import. The new games that are not already in launch bug so launch box automatically filters out duplicates if you rerun the import process. So that way you don t have to add new games. One by one and there we go advanced warriors loads on a retroarch now in the intro.
I mentioned that there is a way to simulate the super gameboy effect in retro work. If you followed last week s tutorial for the game boy and game boy color. You know that gambit has the option to colorize gameboy games for you now this isn t the same true effect as if you were to load it through super gameboy. However you can achieve some pretty awesome things this way so first let s go down to online updater.
We ll go down to update. Overlays and we ll press x. Now on the bottom left. You see that it s downloading the overlays.
We ll wait for it to finish downloading and unpacking. The zip file that retroarch downloaded once that is finished let s go to the settings tab and let s go down to on screen overlay. We ll press x to go into here and in here this is where we can set certain settings..
So we can display overlays autoload prefer overlays a hide overlay in menu display keyboard overlay overlay preset opacity scale and the keyboard overlay preset so we ll leave with the keyboard overlay settings alone so let s go to overlay presets let s go down to handhelds for this demonstration. We ll select gb. A cfg well load that config once you have the overlay set in retroarch. You can see that the game kind of runs underneath.
The gba overlay. So let s head on back to the settings tab and into video. Let s go down to where it says the aspect ratio index this should say custom just hit right on your arrow keys. Until it says custom.
We ll go down to enter your scaling it should say off. But we ll turn it back to on once you set the integer scale come back over to the custom viewport width. Here let s go left twice to where it says 720 and on the high. It will go left once to where it says 614.
Once you go back into game. The game. Should now be small enough to fit into the overlay now personally. I don t use the overlays.
All that much and as you can see it s still not perfect you can see the top has the little gray bar and the bottom has the gray bar. It looks kind of like a little bit of an overlap of the over lay funneling. It funnily enough and funnily is not a word. I i know that much but you can see though that the game is now more or less into this area.
If you turn to integer scaling off. You can do the pixels. One by one once you lower it to say 624 the height to try to eliminate those dark bars at the top. It puts it into the top left corner.
So unfortunately. We re gonna have to stick integer scaling on for it to stay in the center. Something that i haven t tested those back into the on screen overlay. We can tell the overlay scale to go up a couple of points.
Which should help with the scaling on the bars on the top and the bottom. But then now. We re gonna have a little bit of space on the left and the right so it it doesn t quite exactly look perfect and then of course you lose a little bit of the image of the overlay..
But i mean. This is these are more or less. The settings that you have available to make it fits as long as you keep a backup of your retro art config file you can mess with all the settings that you want and if you mess something up just revert back to your old config file and try again and of course this applies to the game boy and game boy color. So if you ve got the game boy color eyes you can give it an overlay now you re not just limited to the overlay that a retro art has when you download it through the online updater there are tons of more overlays in that folder.
You can download them off the internet or you can make them yourself in photoshop and put them in the overlays folder in your retro art root folder. There s a overlays folder. In there dump your overlays in there. As long as they meet the right dimensions load them up the same way that i showed you how to load up the gba image and voila you can essentially have whatever you want on the sides of your game.
And that s it that s how you get the gba emulated with a little bit of extra niceties and i ll hop up this i ll use last week s turn of phrase with a little bit more flair. My name is brad nymph.
