Think its interesting when people ask about identity and indigenous identity and sort of of how you define it and i think i spent a lot of time trying define my indigeneity finding myself has been a journey after spending. Many many years justifying and proving and feeling ashamed or feeling not worthy. My grandmother was in residential school.
So we were never we never knew who we were and i wondered how many people have the same thing happened to them. And how many people are lost. Such as i am trying to find out and break through this barrier of living.
Which world do i live in and how does this all relate and how did this happen. I had some very mixed feelings about people just claiming identity.
I grew up sort of wondering what does make you indigenous and also sometimes feeling like really upset about people just claiming to be indigenous. Thats always been really something really complicated and hard for me to look at and i understand it i do because there are people who outright you know represent our communities who have absolutely no right doing that so that they can benefit from you know lets say funding or you know accolades or whatever. It is very heavy ideologies that i maybe was carrying before the show werent okay.
Because part of being an indigenous person is kindness and so if i hold on to these beliefs that are unkind and that hurt people then how am. I actually accessing my own indigenous knowledge working with chris and helping him reclaim and seeing what it does when someone gets to feel like they belong seeing how they open up in their spirit shines thats the future thats how were gonna heal ourselves if people are realistic and people will listen take the time to just understand that indigenous comes in all shapes forms and colors jeans kick out anywhere. They want i think we have a long way to go to heal.
I think. Its been forced upon us.
I think the government has put us in a situation to try and and split us apart and breaks apart and try and make us so we dont understand who we are you know the government has a hundred year planted too and theyve not theyre not relented on that so to try and become indigenous again. I found was really hard. What makes you indigenous is the people who claim you everybody has the right to seek out their own truth.
And sometimes that truth is you know truth of who you are and where you come from and you know what if if that person will never find their community. Because its been lost somewhere along the way then we as indigenous people in the community around them have to claim them. Ive met a lot of people in the same situation as me and i realize were all struggling.
But i also realized the power of the people that are out there and the movement thats happening right now and things are changing. Its going to be better. .
