Steam is a video game digital distribution service platform developed by Valve Corporation. It was launched in September 2003 as a way for Valve to provide automatic updates for their games, but eventually expanded to include games from third-party publishers. Initially launched as a software client component to help keep Valve’s games up-to-date, the Steam service has expanded to include web- and mobile-based interfaces for consumers and developers for third-party games. Between the standalone software client and online services, Steam offers digital rights management (DRM), matchmaking servers, video streaming, and social networking services. It also provides the user with installation and automatic updating of games, and community features such as friends lists and groups, cloud saving, and in-game voice and chat functionality.
The software provides a freely available application programming interface (API) called Steamworks, which developers can use to integrate many of Steam’s functions into their products, including matchmaking, in-game achievements, microtransactions, and support for user-created content through Steam Workshop. Though initially developed for use on Microsoft Windows operating systems, versions for macOS and Linux were later released. Mobile apps were later released for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone in the 2010s. The platform also offers a small selection of other content, such as design software, game soundtracks, anime, and films.
The Steam platform is the largest digital distribution platform for PC gaming, estimated in 2013 to have 75% of the market space.[4] By 2017, users purchasing games through Steam totaled roughly US$4.3 billion, representing at least 18% of global PC game sales.[5] By 2019, the service had over a billion registered accounts with 90 million monthly active users. The success of the Steam platform has led to the development of a line of Steam Machine microconsoles, which include the SteamOS operating system and Steam Controllers, and the Steam VR platform.
Epic Games, Inc. (formerly Potomac Computer Systems and later Epic MegaGames, Inc.) is an American video game and software development company based in Cary, North Carolina. The company was founded by Tim Sweeney as Potomac Computer Systems in 1991, originally located in his parents’ house in Potomac, Maryland. Following his first commercial video game release, ZZT (1991), the company became Epic MegaGames in early 1992 and brought on Mark Rein, who is the company’s vice president to date. Moving their headquarters to Cary in 1999, the studio’s name was simplified to Epic Games.
Epic Games develops the Unreal Engine, a commercially available game engine which also powers their internally developed video games, such as Fortnite and the Unreal, Gears of War and Infinity Blade series. In 2014, Unreal Engine was named the “most successful videogame engine” by Guinness World Records.[4]
Epic Games owns video game developers Chair Entertainment and Psyonix, as well as cloud-based software developer Cloudgine, and operates eponymous sub-studios in Seattle, England, Berlin, Yokohama and Seoul. While Sweeney remains the majority shareholder, Tencent acquired a 48.4% outstanding stake, equating to 40% of total Epic, in the company in 2012, after Epic Games realized that the video game industry was heavily developing towards the games as a service model. Following the release of the popular Fortnite Battle Royale in 2017, the company gained additional investments that enabled to expand its Unreal Engine offerings, establish esport events around Fortnite, and launch the Epic Games Store. As of 2018, the company has an estimated US$15 billion valuation.

Right good. Morning welcome to. Mr g’s basement of 5 am and welcome to to mr.
G rant. Today. Because today.
We are gonna talk about steam vs. The games launcher and you’re going. Mr.
G why look so tired since 5 am and i was gonna be playing red dead redemption.

But i thought it was gonna be unlocked this morning. But it’s not yet its unlocks later so we’re doing this video for y’all. Instead.
So. This glorious vistage. You get.
This is me. If i am lucky you face camp um. I’ve been using steam since before some of you were even born.
I think i used team the first time in 1999.

When i was trying to install half life 2 off of a cd onto my pentium. 2 of my parents basement steam was basically valves drm at the time which required you to connect to the internet which i had to do over 56k modem and i was like what the hell is this well now it turns out steam is my game platform that i’ve been using for ever. And if you haven’t noticed they just rejigged the library to look more like the epic game store using tiles.
And i’ve got how many games in here 209 of 321 probably i have software tools remember having a hundred and eleven tools in here. But there you go you can see i’ve been using steam for a long time. It’s got a lot of things going for it you can do it in offline mode.
If you need to but you’ve got to have your password entered at least one time it does have two factor authentication also has an app. You can get on your phone. Which is handy.
If you just want to look at your games.

And scroll your friends lists how’s the store looking on steam well stores you know it’s store. It’s gonna advertise you games. But you can also follow curators.
Which are people you think hey they recommend decent games. I can check them out it’s also going to really pay attention to what you like and try right man games to you that it thinks you like all stuff that the epic game store isn’t gonna do because the epic game stores. Just gonna show you whatever games.
They’ve got because they don’t have nearly the library of games. The steam ass probably the biggest thing that you’re gonna get from steam. Which you’re not gonna be getting epic game stories reviews.
But we all know with steam now some of those reviews can be not as accurate as we’d like for example in borderlands.

3. Decided to come out on epic. And everybody was like well we hate epic.
Because when we think of epic. We think of fortnight and everyone over 25 8 set game and we’re like why aren’t you on steam. So there were terrible reviews for borderlands 2 on steam.
But for the most part. I do really enjoy getting access to reviews ones that are recent and all reviews and some of the extra information and game stuff you’re gonna get us steam. That you’re not gonna get on the epic game store.
So there’s there’s my pros and cons of steam.

Let’s chug along and jump over to ill epics game launcher alright currently there we are yep. I’m didn’t wasn’t lying to you we’re still pre loading red dead redemption. But if you haven’t used that but game storage just because you’re like sucks.
I’m going to stick with steam well there’s some reasons you might want to reconsider that reason number one that i enjoy the epic game. Store is i’ve gotten a lot of games 100 free now just last weekend. I played a free game on steam which was great it was a free weekend for generation 0.
I got to keep that game for a whole 24 hours and then it was gone not so with the epic store they offer a free game for a few days you get to keep it forever let me show you the games that i’ve picked up for free in the last couple months since i’ve been using the epic game store. All of these batman games for free enter. The gungeon free.
All the lego batman for my kiddo for free rebel.

Galaxy got that one for free and just picked up so much for free so if you look at my library. That’s almost 50 of my games in my epic games library are for free also as a youtuber. There’s one other really cool thing for me that i like it.
Which is if you go to buy a game on the epic game store. It’s gonna give you an option click buy now. We don’t actually want to buy this well maybe i want to buy this it looks kind of interesting.
I can put in a creator tag right here. And now if i do that i can go ahead and actually end up donating part of the money goes to that creator. So if you were to put in my creator tag.
Which is mr g.

All caps. Pla y. Yes plays which i can’t use my own tag haha.
Very funny epic. But that means i would get a little part of the sales for that game. And it costs you nothing.
Which is pretty awesome other than that though the big downside with the epic game. Store is there aren’t any recommendations really there aren’t any reviews you can look at per se. You’re just gonna see whatever games.
They’ve got going on right now um looks like there are yep.

There’s so much still free you can still pick it up free and that’s it there’s not as many games on there right now. But obviously they’re just starting out ended up yep can i have to get that red dead going later um. So i would say solely for the reason that you get a decent amount of free titles and not just lame titles on epic games or give it a try give it a look it’s not like it’s a huge system hog on my system.
It’s not terrible and i don’t have to play fortnight on it no there’s no four diamond on here at all so. If that’s one of the reasons. You’ve been like i’m never touching.
That reconsider it they also take slightly smaller of a cut than steam. Does i think the average is around 30. Which is like wow.
That’s a lot. Which is why hey maybe devs really do put a lot of extra thought into which platform. They want to release on you guys found this video useful and you want to see more 5 am.
Rants of me just rambling over a cup of coffee about what i like and don’t like about stuff do let me know what that like button. I’m gonna go to this coffee. And catch you guys later mister g.
Out. That’s good music music you .
